2nd Trimester

Anyone on progesterone suppositories during 1st tri?

Hi ladies,

I am somewhere around 6 weeks pregnant and Monday I started spotting/cramping. The doctor had me come in for bloodwork, which unfortunetly had poor results. My progesterone level was a 3 and my HCG level was 750. The doctor said I would miscarry. Yesterday I decided to call and ask for something to jumpstart the miscarriage because I had stopped bleeding. They had me come in for more bloodwork. The nurse called with my results saying that she had some good news. My HCG level had doubled, but my progesterone level was still a 3.3. They decided to put me on once a day progesterone suppositories. I am wondering if anyone else has a similar story that has been successful. I am trying not to get my hopes up, but it is hard not to. Thanks in advance!

Re: Anyone on progesterone suppositories during 1st tri?

  • I was on fertility treatments so I was put on Prometrium progesterone suppositories a few days after my IUI.  I took them until I was 9 weeks pregnant.  At that point your body is producing so much estrogen itself that the supplement is pointless by then.  They do help your progesterone levels so if that is what the dr. recommended I would say it makes sense to take it!  Its not the funnest thing to take but its not the worst thing either :)

  • My progesterone levels where low when I first found out, I think like a 8 or 9. I was 6 weeks and my doctor immediatly put me on prometrium (spelling), I think I took that twice a day. After 3 days of taking it she had me come in for more bloodwork and everything was perfect. I took it until I was about 12 or 13 weeks. So my level was not as low as yours but they were low and not normal. I say don't give up hope, just take the meds they give you and eveyrhting should work out fine!

    Good luck!

  • I started spotting around 6 weeks. My Dr. put me on 100mg Progesterone just as a precaution, because of a previous miscarriage. Never checked my levels just went straight on it. So I do not know if I really needed it or not. Never hurts to take precautions. I was on it until 16 weeks. So far so good. (knock on wood) :)

  • I was on a progesterone suppository (Prometrium) for my entire first trimester. I did the suppository 3 times a day, and then toward the end finally dropped down to one time a day.

I have PCOS, and it's extremely common for PCOSers to miscarry because of their low progesterone levels. Thankfully, the suppositories did the trick and I'm now in my 23rd week.

You could very well have a stronger suppository than I did (which would explain only having to do it once a day), but it still wouldn't hurt to ask your doctor if once a day is enough.

  • I took it twice a day in my last pregnancy and this pregnancy, I took it once a day  (suppositories) through the 1st tri.  I stopped around 12 weeks, per dr's directions.  I am now almost 18 weeks.

My level was 8 when I was tested at 5 weeks, so that is why I went on it.  The dr would not have even tested it, had it not been for my previous history of losses.

  • We did IVF so I was on progesterone shots 'till around 5 weeks then switched to progesterone suppositories 'till around 11 weeks.

Lots of women are put on progesterone suppositories for low progesterone levels.  Progesterone helps maintain the pregnancy.  The burst follicle the egg came from is what normally makes the progesterone in the beginning.

  • I was on progesterone suppositories for the first tri for both of my boys.  My situation was more of a "it can't hurt" scenerio because I had two m/c's.  They never tested my progesterone levels and determined if it was low or not.

I hope the suppositories work for you and you get your take home baby!

  • I was on progesteron suppositories for both this pregnancy and with my son.  My numbers were never low, though -- they were just precautionary since we did fertility treatments (standard at my practice).

Anyway -- I hated them... LOL.. I had a little reaction and they made me itch and burn.  But hey - I'm still pregnant and have a beautiful boy at home!  Good luck!

Are you using Crinone 8%?  I have like 21 unopened suppositories if you want (free, of course).  More than a full box worth.  Again -- unopened - never tampered with.

  • I was on progesterone suppositories twice a day for the whole first tri with my son.

My progesterone level was a 6.6 with him - but it all turned out ok! :)

    Good luck.

  • I was put on crinone at 6 weeks after I started brown spotting for two days. My progesterone wasn't low at my first blood draw, but it could have dropped which would have caused the spotting.

Sounds like it's just your body that can't make enough progesterone. If your HCG doubled in 48 hours that's a great sign! I know how hard it is to not get your hopes up but I'm rooting for you!!! Good luck!

  • Yep, I was on the suppositories 2x a day from 5 weeks to 14 weeks.  I had 2 previous miscarriages, so as soon as I found out I was pregnant this time, my dr had me come in and have my levels tested.  I was a 6.3 the first time.  Started the suppositories the day after that, and had ultrasounds/heartbeat checks every 2 weeks until 16 weeks.

I'm now 22 weeks!  I would also say if your HCG is doubling that is a very good sign.

    Good luck!

  • Me too! I had spotting at about 4 weeks and borderline low progesterone so I was put on Crinone until 11 weeks. I was a little nervous when it came time to stop the suppositories but I had no problems. I will be 17 weeks on Sunday. Good luck!!!

  • My progesterone level was slightyl low (around 10) so I was put on Prometrium.  I took it until I was 14 weeks.  I'm 20 weeks now and everything is fine.
