How long does the n/t scan appt last?

I have my n/t scan today and DH wants to be there, but he's going to be late (he has to teach a class until the appt time, then will take a few minutes to drive over). How long did your n/t scan appt last? I don't want him to rush all the way over if it will be over by the time he gets there.

TIA!

Re: How long does the n/t scan appt last?

  • Lurking (again)

Mine took a week. 3 appointments to get the scan. The first appt (with blood) was about 2 1/2 hours. Baby would not cooperate, but with the blood and genetic counseling it was LONG.

I have heard of people taking as little as an hour, or as long as 3+. There is just no way to know if LO will be cooperating!!

    Good luck!

Oh, DH and I just drove ourselves so he could leave if he needed to. He did not come to the 2nd and 3rd attempts, and the tech was awesome and printed out a TON of pics for him :)

  • Mine didn't last that long - maybe 15 minutes with the u/s tech. But I have read where other ladies are there longer. I think they got the shots of the baby that they needed to so that's when they stopped. My u/s tech wasn't very friendly and didn't speak really at all, she seemed very uninterested in pointing things out to us. Everything went good, and the doctor came in after and reviewed it with us.

Edit - I was only speaking of the scan itself. I was there was about 2 hours, including blood work and genetic counselor meetings.

  • My u/s took about 45 min cause the baby wasn't cooperating.

  • If they're doing bloodwork and genetic counseling first he should make it in time for the u/s.  I think those things took about 40 min.  The u/s itself took  30-40 min. because DS wasn't cooperating.

  • Thanks, ladies! Sounds like I will be there a while. I know my first tri screening will be in two parts, with blood work being done (again?) in a few weeks. Will they do blood today as well?

  • Ours was about a half hour w the tech (but 2 babies so 15mins each) and 15 mins with the doctor.

Oh and the nurse spent about 10 minutes trying to get enough blood out of my finger (and it was finally decided that since we're doing the amnio in a few weeks that will give us better information anyway, so we didn't do the blood test).

So all in all about 40 minutes.

  • I didn't get any genetic counseling. I just had a finger prick and an u/s. My tech knew this was my first u/s so she took a little longer with us. The whole thing took half an hour.
  • It took about about 20 minutes for the u/s tech to get all of the measurements she needed.

  • I did the bloodwork a week before. The u/s was about 30 minutes cause the baby wasn't cooperating. Then we met with the doc and then with the genetic counselor. It was about 45-60 minutes.

  • Idem for us. 2 hours total with blood test and genetic counselling, but only 15-20min with the u/s tech for the measurements. Baby was moving a lot, but cooperating enough :o)
