Talk to me like I'm an idiot about wool

Okay - the last time I asked, I was told pretty unequivocally that because my daughter needs to wear one pieces to sleep, we shouldn't wear wool (or fleece) soakers because they would wick. So we've been using PUL over night (over our SBish) and haven't had a problem. Except the last 2 nights we've had a little bit of leaking at the leg because Daddy hasn't been very careful with the cover. Add to that yesterday someone told me wool DOESN'T wick, and now I'm interested again.

If I buy a wool soaker, it would have to be upcycled, because wool is much more pricey than my budget allows. So, if I buy an upcycled wool soaker, how do I wash it, lanolize it and then care for it? Is upcycled as reliable as other wool? If I get a wool wrap (with snaps) are they as reliable as a one piece soaker?

Any information appreciated.

  • I have put a wool soaker on DD under a fleece sleeper. I figure people use fleece soakers/covers, so it can't be that bad. I haven't had any issues.

If you buy an upcycled wool soaker, you can wash it in wool wash. As it's sitting in the sink with the wool wash, or if you want to rinse it first, you dissolve a little bit of lanolin in hot water and add to the sink. Swish it around and let it sit for 15 minutes (or until you remember you have a soaker in the sink!). Drain, roll the soaker in a towel to get the moisture out, and lay flat to dry.

To care for it, put it on your baby. When you take it off, hang it somewhere to air out. If it gets soiled or stinky (after airing), wash and lanolize as above. If it smells OK, put it back into rotation.

I had a Swaddlebees wool wrap (with Velcro) that worked great. It's yours if you want it :)

  • I got my upcycled wool soaker from the shop Ocean Babies on etsy. It was under $15. LO sleeps in a fitted, wool soaker and fleece one-piece jammies. If you sew (even a little), they are fairly easy and quick to make from old wool sweaters. I purchased 5 wool sweaters from the thrift store 1/2 off sale. You can get at least one pair of longies and a soaker or two from each sweater. I used the Katrina pattern, which you can find online for free. I use Lansinoh lanolin and Eucalan wool wash every couple of weeks. Before I made more soakers, I would let her only soaker air out during the day and it was almost always ready to be worn by bedtime.

  • We use upcycled wool footies (Woollybottoms) during the winter months.  Would those work for you?  Not sure why you had said your DD needed footie pajamas.  My DD is a pro-diaper unsnapper, but the footies pretty much hinder that.  I pair that with a long sleeved t-shirt.  I've never tried wool with footie pj's, but I use a wool soaker regularly under an infant gown.  Never had wicking. It's cotton, so I'd assume it's the same effect as footie pajamas.  It's worth a shot!  FWIW, most of my wool came from Spots and is the same price as a new upcycled soaker.  I'd check there.

Thanks for the tips Dr L!  Where do I get wool wash and lanolin? You're going to have PM in a minute or two.

Gosh, i wish I did. I can pretty much put a button on, and it's not pretty at that. I'm definitely going to check etsy though!

I didn't say she needs footie PJs. I said she needs a one piece. She needs her belly covered, because she wears a brace to sleep and the straps will irritate her skin if a shirt were to rise up.

I'll definitely check spots too! Thanks!

  • You can get wool wash tons of places. I think some people use Eucalan, which you can definitely find at any yarn store. I've heard of people using Lanisoh lanolin. I ended up buying a combo wool wash and lanolin from Allioop on HC. I'm sure others will give their recommendations.
  • I use wool under one piece sleepers all the time and have never had it wick out. That is all.
