I've gate checked full size strollers, and then some. Always with a stroller bag thought. I've travelled with my Chariot and gate checked it with no questions asked, and no damage.
Definitely get a travel bag for it, but just know that if something happens to it they won't pay to repair or replace it. If you're flying American Airlines you can't gate check it since it's over 20 lbs. They won't charge you but it has to get checked with your luggage.

We've flown with ours 2x with the bag. It's awesome, I highly recommend it. (it = the bag), Just make sure you register the bag and the stroller w/ UB before you travel so that you get the replacement benefit if its damaged by the airline.
We checked it w/ our regular luggage and wore DS through the airport. But, we fly Southwest, and don't pay bag fees.
Baby Boy Born 3.15.11. 8lb 9oz, 21.75in.
6 month stats: 20lb 11oz (92%tile), 30.12in.(100%tile - who knew it went over 99th? Which means 100% of other 6 month olds are shorter than mine!)

The other airlines don't charge for checked car seats or strollers either, whether you do it with your luggage or at the gate.

We recently traveled with our uppa baby and purchased the bag, mainly because they will send you a replacement if something breaks during the flight. The bag worked great for us. ETA we gate checked with the bag
