So Ben's work party next month has a costume theme. I hate this, but Aussies love it and apparently I'm a big ole grinch. Whatever.
Anyway, the theme is "gangsters, G-men and gangster's molls". Obviously only one of those choices is for women, which means I'm expected to show up in a gangster's moll outfit, like so:
I am...not thrilled about this. Not really how I wanted to meet his bosses, you know? Maybe I'm uptight, but it seems inappropriate for a work party. (Also weird because like half the people at his work are women, but there's only one - vaguely skanky - costume choice for them.)
How weird would it be if I went as a G-man, even though I'm a woman? Black suit and tie, white shirt, maybe some sunglasses...no?
Re: work xmas party - is this weird?
I've never been to a costume party where thy told you what to wear...and I have never heard the term "gangster's molls" before, so maybe I'm just out of it. Could you do something like #2 but down play it a bit? Maybe wear pants instead of a skirt?
Maybe Ben can talk to some of the other laides in the office to see what they're wearing? I do think that the outfits above are not very appropriate for a work crowd...
ETA: I just re-read and realized this is a CHRISTMAS party!!! Add weird points for that...I had assumed it was a Halloween party...
Heh, yeah it's a bit weird...howabout something like this instead? You can even rewear the suit in the future for an interview (minus the hat, gun, tie, etc) =P Or just get a nice pinstriped women's suit for interviewing and add the accessories. I hate spending $40-50 on costumes and just wearing it once...
I've actually been to a few parties with this theme.... in college.
Like pp said, I'm with wearing a standard pant suit or at the very minimum a blazer of some sort. If you wanted to sex it up a tiny bit, you could wear a bustier underneath the blazer. And a fedora is a must.
I know, right?!
Aussies looooooove costume (aka "fancy dress") parties, and they almost always have a theme you're supposed to meet. It's weird, but I've mostly gotten used to it. Doesn't mean I'm a fan though.
A striped suit + fedora is a good idea...I just don't really want to buy a suit - or anything, really - since I'm midway through losing a significant amount of weight and would probably never wear it again (I mentioned a black suit before because I'm sure I can find a really cheap secondhand one - not sure about pinstriped).
Blah. At least I have a while to think about it...

Hmm good point. I think black (or anything dark) would work too--doesn't have to be pinstriped IMO. And the fedora + tie would complete the look.
um, YES. it's weird. haha.
other PPs had some good ideas though!
Totally bizarre, but I get that it's "normal" for them. I mean think about some of the strange customs we have here!
I also say shop in your closet...do you have LBD that fits? You can use that and build from there. Or black slacks and a white shirt and maybe a sweater vest or something else very "bonnie and clyde". red shoes are a must! Or a black skirt and fitted knit top with a scarf and beret like this:
Some other "fashionable" takes on this look (that you can probably recreate with stuff you guys already own or can buy at a local thrift store or eBay for relatively cheap):

I guess another option would be do go with a flapper look:
Personally, I think you're WAY to hip to just do a pinstriped black/white suit or fringed dress. I bet if you shop your closet you'll be able to recreate a more authentic/stylish look than those stereotypical, costumey ones!

Thanks for the ideas, Lori! I might be able to do something like this (though I'd need a beret).
No way could I pull off a flapper look - totally the wrong body shape. I'd look like a fringed potato.

Love these looks! I knew Lori would have some great suggestions!
