Baby Names

Two colors? Also, sibset = too matchy?

So, I am not pregnant yet. We're not 100% positive on how soon were going to try for number two, thinking very early next year... But I am a bit obsessed with names, and am already thinking about them.

I love the name Violet, and always have, but DH and I have two issues. Our last name is a color, so this potential little Violet ____ would have a color for a first name AND a last name. This bother's DH more than it bothers me.

I mostly associate Violet with the flower, which bring me to my only issue with the name. Our daughter's name is Basil Isabella, so Basil and Violet would be two plants. He thinks it's cute because he calls Basil his little "sprout" so that would make them both "sprouts"(he gets a big kick out of this actually, haha!), but I'm not sure if it seems... cheesy, I guess... Not sure...

I love the idea of two girls Basil Isabella and Violet Amelia. Hmmm.... Thoughts?

And for the record, I don't care if you hate Basil's name, because frankly, we love it, and it suits her very well, so I don't need to hear it if you don't like it. Not to be rude, I'm just tired of hearing people telling me that Basil is a boy's name. I am well aware. And I don't care. :)

  • I love Violet!

But....if it were just the color thing, okay.  Just the matchy sibset, okay.  But the double strike of them both does seem like a bit much to me.  Sorry!

  • I actually have never heard of Basil as name until now.  I like it.  Kudos to you!  As far as Violet Amelia, I love it.  I personally wouldn't worry too much about two colors in the name.  She might get teased a little in grade school, but most kids will unless they have a VERY common, very boring name. GL to you when you decide to start TTC!  We are just starting to try for our baby #2.

Agree!! Love Violet, like Basil, but the 2 together might be a bit much. Maybe Violet as a middle name?

  • I like the name and think that if you like those names you should go for it.  If you are so concerned though about sounding matchy, why not invert the names to be Amelia Violet?  Just a thought though.... GL in trying!

My other first name choice is Amelia, and I thought of Violet for the MN, but our last name is one syllable and it just seemed to abrupt as Amelia Violet ___.

  • Yeah, bad subset, worse first name last name combo, sorry

  • Personally, I'm not big on cutesy sib sets though I think Violet is a very pretty name... I don't think I'm the norm though as I don't am not that into thinking about "sib sets" at all except to balk at the idea of cutesy ones.

  • If I heard of the sibset Basil & Violet I would think it's adorable! For the record, I like Basil alot! If I had a Basil, I imagine I would call her Bay for short *pitter pat*

    GL! Smile

  • LOVE Violet but I'm going to have to say no to your circumstance Violet Brown is way too many colors (Im assuming Brown) and it might not be so bad if it weren't for her plant sister name Basil as a sibset

  • I think having two color names is worse than two plants.  I think people are pretty used to Violet as a name and wouldn't immediately think of them both being plants.

  • I love Violet. I'm imagining Violet Greene... hmm. It's not the worst combo, but personally I would avoid it. This would be a bigger issue for me than Violet/Basil sibset. Actually I think Violet and Basil are cute together.

And you shouldn't need to worry about your DD's name. We may be brutally honest on this board, but we have the decency to not critique/criticize the names of existing children. :) Kind of an unwritten rule.

  • I LOVE the name Violet. I actually know someones daughter named that is she is a GEM. I actually wouldn't mind the matchy match first and last name as colors because I associate is with a flower as well...purple is a color..violet is a flower.

Basil I think British BOY...I call people for a living so names are something I see over 500 a day and Basil I would never say like the plant I would say it the British way... just automatically.

Like the name I say the most at work is Jorge...which I say ''HOR-HEY'' twice I've been corrected with a ''You mean George?'' and its thrown me completely

  • I really like the name Violet, but the two colors would bother me a bit. What about Viola? I guess it wouldn't really go with Amelia though... hmmm.

  • If you really want a matching sibset, perhaps Rosemary... or tarragon.

The ting is, I *dont'* want a matching set. AT ALL. I just really happen to love the name Violet(Basil would have been Violet if she wasn't a Basil)

  • Violet is a beautiful name--I don't think I would let the two colors thing stop me. I also love Viola.

And unless a sibset is REALLY egregious, I don't care much about sibsets, since they won't spend the majority of their lives being referenced as part of one. Basil and Violet is cute!

  • I think it works. Basil and Violet are a cute sibset.

Also, I LOVE the name Basil. Maybe because it rhymes with Hazel? Stick out tongue

  • The sibset doesn't bother me as much as the FN/LN combo does.

That said, there are significantly worse things to name your child; if you like it, use it!

  • I think Basil Isabella is adorbale !   I love the name Violet but am so not a Matchy name person at all so I wouldn't use it... and the double color thing would def. bother me.  I  do love Violet Amelia though
  • We've had to consider the matchy sibset thing for future children as well.  DD's name is Violet, and so many of the other girl names we love are either plants/flowers or colours!  I don't think the sibset would deter me from using the name.  But if our last name was a colour; I really don't think I would use a FN that was also a colour.  It makes me think of the book "Amber Brown Is Not a Crayon."
