Breastfeeding

should I say something?

LO has an ear infection and a little cold- fever, vomiting, cough. We went to the pedi yesterday and started amoxicillin. His fever got pretty high last night (104) and he vomited every time he nursed or drank even a little water. I called our pedi's nurse this morning to see when I should get really concerned or consider the ER. She gave me several ideas, but one thing she said was to stop nursing until he stops vomiting.

That didn't sound right to me, so I checked kellymom.com and some other BFing resources, who all said to keep BFing. I think the nurse was just using formula guidelines, because originally she said, "Stop giving him formula and try pedialyte," and when I said I was BFing, she said, "Well sometimes it makes it worse, so just give him pedialyte until he keeps some down."

So I have 2 questions- I should keep BFing, even if he's vomiting, right? and would you say something at the next appointment? I don't want to be rude, but if she's given out bad/outdated information, she should probably update her research.

Thank you!

Re: should I say something?

  • Poor baby!  What I would do is continue to BF but limit the amount he gets.  So if he normally nurses 10 minutes I would only let him nurse until my letdown stops then unlatch.  It may be easier to control how much he's getting if he will take a bottle.  So instead of giving him 5 oz, only give him an oz and see how he handles that.  Then every hour I would offer an oz of BM.  If he does well with that I would gradually increase the # of oz / time on the breast to see what his stomach can tolerate.

EDIT to add:  pump after he eats to keep up your supply.

  • Yes to both of your questions.

Keep BFing the baby, just do as a pp suggested and limit it some.

Talk to the doc at the next appointment about the situation with the nurse. You are right to say that is formula information, so if the doc really wants to support bfing then (s)he need to know that the nurse is giving out formula information that isn't good advice.

I should have included that, the pedi is very supportive of breastfeeding. I just wanted to make sure I was not mistaken before saying something to her.

I'll keep nursing, thank you ladies!

  • FWIW, when my LO was sick & refusing to nurse, my pedi said try nursing her & supplement with pedialite to make sure she gets hydrated/electrolytes. I told him I had frozen BM and could I supplement with that, he said sure, same effect. So I gave her an oz or 2 of BM through a syringe after each weak BFing attempt.
