Good News! F/U to my other posts about platelets

Well, my doctor is back from vacation and I had my appointment today. I feel SO much more at ease.

She explained to me that they are considering my platelet count to be stable, because even though it dropped from 134 to 127, there is a 15% margin of error on labs to test platelets. Because my liver enzymes are fine, she has pretty much ruled out HELLP syndrome. (woohoo!!)

It looks like it's just ITP, which is probably the best possible outcome. As long as my platelets don't drop to under 100, they'll let LO stay in until he/she is ready to come on their own! Otherwise, they'll induce - but she doesn't think that they'll have to.any time soon!

The only downside is that I now have to have my blood drawn every week. And, I have to repeat my 24 hour urine catch. But, I'll take that over being induced any day!! :)

  • Fabulous news - Keep us updated. I am so excited for the wave of birth stories we are about to get here on our board!! :-)
  • Not to be a downer but ITP can be very serious. I actually had it as a child and was hospitalized. Your platelets look good for now. But if you have easy bruising or increased bleeding from cuts or scrapes make sure you call your doctor ASAP! Don't skip any of the blood draws and stay on top of the platelet levels.
  • Great! Hoping it stays stable for you, and glad your Dr. is monitoring things so well!

Oh, I know. I didn't want to be redundant in this post, but I gave my background in another one I posted a while back. I actually had acute ITP when I was 6, and couldn't walk for a month due to the bruising. So, I absolutely know it is serious. I wasn't trying to downplay it at all - it's just not as serious as HELLP syndrome (they would induce immediately for that, because of the risks), and in my scenario, it was the best outcome/diagnosis I could have had!

ETA: It's so crazy, not many people had heard of it when I was little...now, I feel like on these boards I'm finding so many people that have had it as kids! It's kind of crazy how common it is, yet they still have no idea why it happens!
