July 2011 Moms

pumping in the car

I hate it!  I had no choice but to today and it was awful.  I couldn't get comfy and I felt like the suction was not as strong (using the car adapter for my Medela pump-in-style).

Any advice?  My job is going to have me doing day trips, so it (car pumping) is gonna become a way of life.

  • The whole concept sounds less than ideal. No advice, but I wanted to suggest posting this on the breastfeeding board. A lot of exclusive limpets are there and have been at it longer than us July mamas.

  • I do it all the time! I think it's just a personal preference thing as it doesn't really bother me.

The suction is definitely not as strong but for me it seems to work the same. Also check your car adapter and your pump...make sure the voltages match.

I just hook the tubes together, put the flanges in my bra and go to it I guess. I usually set the pump in the passenger seat.

  • I agree the suction is not as good, but far better than batteries

  • I love pumping in the car.  It is such a time saver!

Are you using a Medela adapter?  I have an ameda pump, and the ameda adapter (it says to only use their brand).  It gives the same suction on it as it does when it is plugged in.

I'm glad I'm not the only Ameda girl around here, I was feeling left out :)

I also use the Ameda adapter and it seems to have the same suction in the car as it does when I'm at home.  It IS a huge time saver sometimes to pump there--I've done it while driving and as a passenger.

  • I love to pump in the car. I usually get more too because I am paying attention to driving and not volume. Maybe try adjusting your steering wheel and/or seat. I hope it gets better for you because it is saves so much time.

  • I have found the same thing - suck baby suck! I don't love pumping in the car BUT I've gotten into a groove with it.

My biggest concern is covering up. And I found the best solution - I wear the open drape sweaters that are longer in the front. Works like a charm.

  • what sort of hands free bra do you have? I think if you have a good one (simple wishes is my favorite by far) it's not too bad! I did pump with my madela hands free bra once and it was way more of a PITA.

Question for Ameda Users- how long does it take you to pump with your Purely Yours Pump? I can get 4-6 ounces each side with my PISA in about 10 min - but when I use my Ameda it takes much longer- it does stimulate better so I'm torn...maybe I'm not using it right because I'm so used to the convenience of the PISA?

I use a medela symphony (hospital) and the ameda.  I EP so I always pump for 30 mins.  I get the same amount. The symphony is more gentle on my nips though, so I keep it.  It is also basically silent, so it is nice to have in the bedroom so it doesn't wake up H.

I'm an EPer like Katie, and I've pretty much always only used the Ameda, except in the hospital (I was on a seizure med I was supposed to have been weaned off before the baby came, but  he showed up early.  They had me pump with the hospital-grade Medela to get things started).  I pump about 34oz/day.  How much I get each session depends on how long it's been since the last session, but if I go 4 hours, I get between 4 and 7 oz.  My sessions are 20 minutes, but the majority of the total is out in the first 10.

Ameda sells different sized horns, you could always see if a larger or smaller diameter helps.  I've heard stories of that making a ton of difference.
