In most cases, your child's cord blood is actually no good to them and banks are not going to tell you if you donated too little, they'll take your money and you'll be paying for useless cells.

It's actually beneficial to my own health that we do, and it's the first thing my hematologist said to me. It's pretty expensive, but I mean, it could very well save a life. You just never know. If you sign up for information, they will send you a lot of helpful information and stories of people who ended up using their brothers/sisters cord blood.
ETA:
That's without me having to go into my health issues.
I am having the baby at a university hospital, so I donate everything that I'm not taking home to them (I only plan on taking home LO) - but part of it cost as well.
I was planning on donating it. However, I'm torn with that decision now. From what I [barely] understand, to be able to donate, it seems like the cord is clamped off the slightest bit early to save the blood for harvesting. I might be leaning towards waiting until the cord is not longer pumping before they can clamp it, so then they can harvest whatever is remaining, which doesn't always leave enough to be collected. I guess I want my baby to get whatever nature intended it to.
I'm no expert. I definitely need to do more research on it, but that's what my thoughts are on it as of right now.
We are delaying clamping so the blood flows into the baby, nothing to bank or donate unfortunately but there are many studies that say its rather beneficial for the baby to get the rest of that blood at birth.
We will most likely donate it if possible, I'm not sure if we can though as none of the hospitals in my city are on the list of ones that take donations in the state. But it's something I'll be bringing up with my doctor soon to find out if we can do it.
Last week's episode of Private Practice pretty much put the donation bug in DH's head.

Medical shows are a no no for me, considering my health condition is so rare it showed up on House once. They put too many crazy ideas in our heads!
I see your point, but I definitely don't think the idea of donating cord blood is crazy. Until then, I was considering banking it but none of the literature I had ever mentioned donating it (obviously, because that would not benefit the company making money), so until that point, the thought hadn't crossed either of our minds.

This is true, I just assumed they were doing some crazy medical thing, but donating cord blood is definitely not crazy, at all. I think if you're not going to bank it for your future use, donating it is wonderful.

They were using it to treat a Leukemia patient. The crazy thing they did was basically stealing privately banked cord blood when the donor bank came up negative. So, yes, they still did something crazy!
We are considering it, but a public bank, not a private one. There are none in CT and it would actually get shipped to another state, which was what I was reading from the info we got from the OB. Honestly, it will come down to cost and I really need to research it more.
no, if a vaginal delivery baby will get delayed clamping. If another c-section, I would still like to delay a little bit, but other than that I don't have as much control. I don't think the benefits outweigh the cost for most people.
Well thanks everyone that chimed in... it's not something I ever thought of until I got sick myself and then pregnancy later on. Wish it didn't cost so much, but it's probably going to be something we are going to be doing. It's great that so many want to donate theirs too!

The same for us.
First birth: Natural (med-free) Second birth: Hell, no. Epidural all the way.
Re: Are you banking the cord blood?
