Health & Wellness Check-In

I can't remember what day we planned to do this post, but here's one for today anyway Smile

Updates on one/more/all of these topics, or add your own:

How is your diet lately? What are you looking to improve or change? (By "diet" I mean the holistic sense - the food that you eat - which can include tracking or limiting, but doesn't necessarily.)

What exercise are you doing right now? Have any winter exercise you're looking forward to? Training for something?

Do your friends and family have a positive impact on your diet and exercise habits, or a negative one? And the flipside - do you have a negative or positive impact on them that you're aware of?

Re: Health & Wellness Check-In

  • DW and I have been doing WW since October 1.  First time for me, second for her.  We have had some success but are struggling too.  Being hungry is hard.  Seeing weight come off is awesome.  Days when the scales go up are hard.  Eating smaller portions feels good.

I just found out my sister and her partner are also dieting, so that was a good conversation to talk about how it is going for us all.

I usually bike commute year round.  This year I will be on parental leave so I will need to find a new plan.  I also walked my dog 3X day back in the day but that won't happen with a LO. I might go to one dog walk and then...gulp....become a mall walker with LO this summer.  Boy am I NOT that demographic.  Oh well...it will be good exercise.

  • Thanks for starting this thread. We decided on Thursdays, so you're spot on!

I'm doing a detox plan right now so I'm loosing weight and feeling good, but it hasn't been easy (the first couple weeks), but now I'm in the groove. It's definitely changed my thinking about what I put in my body and how much of it. I love feeling like I'm getting closer to a healthy weight  and doing something good for my toxic load (which are both connected to our ttc plans).

Now that I'm comfortable with the above changes, I'm going to add in more exercise. I've started going to yoga a bit more, but also really need to find regular times to do classes/gym/swimming. C and I have been biking together a bit, but with the change in weather (rain) that may not be happening as much. I/We just really need to put time on the calendar for exercise.

Over the past month I've realized how connected food and socializing are really, and how it's up to me to be in control of what I'm putting in my body regardless of who I'm with, where we are, etc. For me, will power and self-reflection are key and I hope to be able to continue this new-found, but never easy, process in the future.

  • My diet is so-so lately.  I've been trying to eat more iron rich non-meat foods lately because my anemia doesn't seem to be getting any better with the supplements only.  I still regularly skip meals (breakfast and lunch) because I just don't think about them, I really need to work on that.  We went shopping yesterday and I got some good food, steelcut oats (my favorite breakfast), 13 bean soup mix, etc.

I haven't been exercising lately because too much (meaning not a lot of) exertion makes me dizzy/faint.  I really like to take walks but need J with me in case I pass out, by the time she gets home from work she just wants to sit on the couch so walks haven't been in the cards lately.

I think J and A have a positive impact on my diet.  I sometimes crave greasy junk food but J guides me towards healthier options and when I ask A what she wants for dinner she ALWAYS mentions a salad with dinner.

  • Ugh.  I've gotten off-track lately.  I've been doing Weight Watchers online and had been doing well, but lately there have been a lot of baked goods around at work and I've kind of fallen off the wagon.  I've been able to avoid gaining much back, but haven't been losing.

Karen is super-helpful and supportive and she's also trying to lose some, so we are re-starting up with Weight Watchers together.

  • I started on WW again yesterday. I'm not mad at myself for falling off the wagon; I find counting hard, but I know it helps keep me in a more comfortable place, so I want to make the effort again. I would LOVE to be down about 10 pounds by Christmas, but my weight is very stable and hard to lose, so we'll see. Making the effort though.

I'm 100% resting this week, except for the mile or so I walk each day getting to/from the train. I might take next week off too if my shins are still hurting from the marathon. After that I'm going to start a new round of P90X. It will be harder to stay motivated without Jen doing it with me, but I was really enjoying the results last time before we quit to travel. I'm signed up for a 5K in December but I don't really have any plans to train for it - probably just go out for a jog 2x a week starting in November.

I know that I have a positive influence on Jen's eating habits - she has told me this many times, and I've seen her tastes change to lighter/healthier food over the last 10 years. I find it harder to eat healthy in social situations - not so much because I feel peer pressured, but because it's so easy to use the "Mike got a pina colada, too!" type of excuse.

Is this from the anemia or something else?  Sounds scary.  Have you talked to your doctor?  There is a condition called POTS that can cause this.  (Sorry if this is too intrusive or you already know what is causing it.)

  • I have been doing WW online and it's been going okay.  Most of the time it is fairly easy for me to stay on track, but like others have mentioned, social situations are challenging.  My workplace is also challenging - people bring in lots of food to share, candy, etc.

My exercise has been pretty light.  I try to bike to work 3x a week and I take yoga once a week.  I'd love to work in at least one active activity or workout on the weekends.

C and I are both good for each other's eating habits.  We love to go to the farmer's market together and cook.  One of our hobbies is finding new and exciting vegetable recipes.  C isn't into sweets, so it makes it easy to not keep them in the house (they are a trigger food for me). I help her to eat healthy food more consistently than if she was just eating on her own.

I assume it's from the anemia, my blood tests came back saying that I have severe anemia so I attribute a lot of my dizziness/faintness/tiredness to it.  I googled POTS and it sounds pretty scary, not something I would ever want to diagnosed with.

My old MD was very holistic and she told me cherries--esp. black cherries help your body absorb iron.  So eat 'em with your spinach or whatever. :)

  • Diet--totally not on any plan. Eating whatever because "it doesn't matter."  Highly in the "precontemplation" phase.  Thinking this should change, but feeling pretty meh about it.

L is an awesome influence on my diet. She is a runner, and when she's training, eats very healthy, and asks me to cook healthy things.  The problem is all the meals I am away from her.  Oh, and I work in a cafe ;)

Dining out is terrible on our eating habits and our budgets!  I hate saying no when people ask us to go out, but I hate blowing $40 on a so-so meal, too. One of the main qualities that I use in deciding what to eat when I go out is "could I/do I make this at home?" So, I rarely order a salad--unless it is really unique--because I make that a lot. And I can't pay $15 for a pasta dish when I could feed half my block for that amount.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you with a scary-sounding disease!  It can be mild too.  It could also be the anemia - the symptoms are pretty similar.

  • My diet has been good.  I still track everything I eat on WW online to maintain my weight loss, and this month will be 6 months of keeping it off, which I'm pretty proud of.  Since we started TTC, I've also dropped artificial sweeteners (which I never ate much of but I had a thing for diet Coke), and cut back on caffeine a bit (I'm a tea, not a coffee drinker, and I don't typically have more than one a day anyway, so I didn't worry about it that much).  I've been eating tons of fruits and veggies (esp. high-folate stuff like greens and beans) and dairy.

I run 30-36 minutes, 3 times a week, on the treadmill.  That's all for exercise (except for normal life stuff like yard work and walking up subway stairs).  I truly hate exercise and only do it because it allows me to eat more and still keep the weight off -- I think of it like medicine.  I had been training for a 5k since January but now that I can run that far, I'm not really sure what I want to do to keep things from getting dull.  I have x-country skis but I never get to use them because snow never seems to cooperate with days off.  I'd like to get snowshoes but they're not in the budget!

My wife was a professional chef when I met her, and our mutual love of cooking and eating food caused us both to gain a lot of weight over the first 4 years of our relationship -- so I can't say she has really had a positive influence on my eating!  She has however been extremely supportive throughout my weight loss journey -- I can't count the number of times she has had a healthy meal on the table for me when I get home from the gym.  Now I'm trying to help her/be supportive of her losing weight so we can both have the energy to chase after a toddler in a couple of years!
