Food Allergy

I'm sure this is a stupid question...

but I googled it and didn't come up with any answers. Is there a rice-based formula and if so, who makes it? I also tried going on Similac, Enfamil and Gerber's websites. Maybe I'm typing in the wrong thing to search for because I'm sure someone has to make one, right? Thanks for helping a tired mommy out!

  • Sorry, but I don't know of a company that makes a rice protein formula. Is your dr suggesting it? I work in a ped office and I've never had our reps from the major formula companies mention a rice protein formula- just milk based, soy, and hydrolized.

  • not a stupid question.. i honestly have never heard of a rice based formula..

are the other hyper allergenic formulas not working?  why do you want a rice-based one?

We took her off of the similac sensitive for a week and just tried to give her extra water for hydration, some vitamin supplements and high fat foods and her rash went away but she lost over a pound. At this point, its obvious we'll have to keep her on formula for a while just to keep her calories up, but she is allergic to EVERYTHING!

I was thinking of trying alimentum again (she hated the taste the first time around) but I'm nervous because its corn based. I don't want to transition her only to find out that she can't have that either.

    Can you use Neocate jr.?

  • Could she have rice milk? There is also a calorie powder called duocal that can be added to food or liquids. You just have to get a Rx for it.

And coconut milk!  We mix one carton of the enriched rice milk with 2 cans of condense coconut milk (I haven't found condensed in a box yet...).  Almost as many calories/fat as whole milk.
