2nd Trimester

Anyone doing progesterone injections?

Hi everyone,

I'm popping over from 1st tri since this is something that wouldn't actually happen until 16 weeks.  I had DD at 35w without any signs of pre-term labor.  Because of this, I have a consult with MFM and there is the possibility that they will recommend progesterone shots from 16-37 weeks.  From what I understand from my midwife they are once a week, and the liquid is oily in nature so can be kinda painful.  But this is all I know.  I was wondering if any of you are currently doing the shots and if you can give any insight.  TIA!

Re: Anyone doing progesterone injections?

  • I did progesterone shots in my rump throughout my first trimester. My husband gave them to me nightly. It was a mixture of progesterone in sesame oil, so it is thicker than the normal shots and takes a few extra second to give. If you give them too fast it can be painful. The key for us was for me to lay down on the bed and relax, and he would alternate sides and areas so no place got it twice. Once a week will allow your injection shot to "heal" much faster than nightly.

If the spot gets sore, put a heating pad on it because the heat that will move the oil around in your body opposed to letting it just sit in that spot. Honestly, some of the shot is mind over matter. The once a week pain, if it is painful, is worth going full term. This is what I kept telling myself.

Good luck though! Shots are never fun.

  • I am doing the shots now...16wks - 37wks.  I delievered my DD at 31 weeks..went into preterm labor at 28 weeks and was able to keep her put until 31 weeks.  The shots are weekly and in your upper part of you butt.  They burn more than hurt.  For me the burning goes away pretty quickly but it leaves what I consider a bruise you can't see for the next couple of days.  But nothing with to much pain.  If it will get me closer to full term I am all for it.  Mine are given to me by a nurse that comes to my house once a week.  Very nice since I couldn't take off work once a week considering I have regular dr appts and specialists and DD appts!

  • I'm doing them weekly now, too.  I'll continue until 36 weeks, I think.  I also give myself daily blood thinner injections, so I'm used to shots at this point... the progesterone shots don't bother me at all.

  • Yes, I'm doing them twice a week, and my husband gives them to me. It might be different for everyone, but I don't find them to be painful.   When we first started doing them, the length of the needle scared me and I worked myself up and got worried about it.  Then when he gave me the shot, I didn't even believe it was in.  For me, it's just little tiny pinch when it goes in and when it comes out.  Getting my blood drawn is more painful for some reason.
  • I'm only 5 weeks pregnant and they started me on them this week. I have to have them 3 times a week and ultrasounds & blood work every Monday....they said my levels are low. I am very worried.
