anyone thinking about cloth diapering?

I decided we are going to do cloth diapers and was wondering if anyone else is going to do them as well. I have been looking around trying to get a grasp on everything and read a bunch of cloth diaper blogs and the group on here but I was wondering when you all plan on buying. I think I am going to get an array of everything slowly and then once the baby comes and I find out what I like I am going to buy more of that kind. Also if you have any suggestions I will be happy to take them :)

  • I am! I am! I am! I already have a few... I plan to start buying once I know the gender.. I am going to start with prefolds and covers then work up from there!

  • I am going to!  I'm planning on using gdiapers...granted I am kind of bent towards them because my last name starts with "g" so it will be like the baby has it's initial on it's behind!  I'm all about helping the environment and I work from home, so I don't think it will be too difficult.  I've heard lots of women love them!

  • We CD our first (didn't start until around 5 months) and we plan on Cding the next. My goal is to do a mixture of prefolds and fitteds with wool covers and then splitting Li's stash with them. Although I intend on fulling out his stash a whole lot once we find out the gender.

I'd look into doing a trial, like Jillian's, so you can get an idea of what will work for your baby. Also, look into buying second hand from Diaperswappers and Spot's Corner on HyenaCart.

Just a heads up, while this can be said of any brand of diaper out there, I've heard more complaints about gDiapers then any others. I hope they work for you guys, but I wouldn't suggest buying an entire stash until you know for sure :)

Yeah, I figured I better not get too carried away right out of the gate.  I'll probably just get a few...and try a variety...but I really hope the gdiapers work!  I'm thinking they will probably be better for later down when the baby is bigger...but I'm not sure.  Thanks for the tips though...I'll make sure and do my research before I get too carried away!

  • Since we have a full stash for DS, we will definitely be CDing again this time around.  I love love love CDs!

Just a friendly recommendation - don't fully stock up on all one brand before your LO arrives.  What works for other babies may not work for yours.

We started with the trial program at Jillians Drawers and ended up not liking some that I would have thought for sure I would have liked.  And even fully stocked we have several different brands.  (Some are better for naps, some are a trimmer fit under clothes, etc.)

Just one other tip - think really hard about velcro.  It is convenient, but it does not launder well.  (And you will be washing diapers every 2-3 days for 2-3 years.)

  • ME TOO! ME TOO! DH thinks I'm nuts, but we'll see :)

I found a post on heatherdriveblog.com about CD'ing. I'm going to read some more :)

  • We CDed #1, and will CD again.  I had a stash of all different brands of pockets & AIOs & plenty of prefolds.  The prefolds are cool with me, but the other kinds are easier when you're out & for granparents.  ;)

If you like the idea of hybrid diapers, you should also check out GroVia and Flip diapers.  We use GroVias when traveling and have a Flip cover that we like, too.  I haven't used GDiapers but have heard lots of complaints about them, too.

Ditto this!  We hated G, but love Flip!

  • I actually just started CDing my DD about a month ago (just before she turned 18mo) to see how it would go.  My parents cloth diapered me and my younger siblings who are in highschool now, so I've been exposed to it and helped my mom back when it was diaper pins and ugly rubber pants.  I wish I had done it from the start but DH wasn't on board.  He still isn't, but is coming around day by day and I like it enough to try it with our new baby.  I'm using all pockets now with DD.  The brands that fit her best (she is tall and slim) are FB, Kawaii, and Sunbabys.  The popular BG pockets don't fit her thighs well at all which leads to leaks.  I can't get them tight enough.  I wouldn't buy too huge of a stash in advance because you don't know what will work with your LO.  There is a site out there called Jillian's Drawer that offers sample trial packages, you keep what you like and return what you don't for a refund.

For our newborn we'll use the leftover newborn disposables we have probably until the belly button stub falls off and then I'll make the switch over to cloth.  For our newborn I'll use prefolds with covers (Grovia and Thirsties) with snappies.  It'll just be easier with breastfed poos every changing and the OS pockets will probably be a bit big at that point.  Once #2 fits in the pockets, I'll use them on him/her, too.  I have a stash of 22 pockets for DD now and I'm slowly adding to that for the new baby.  I have 35 indian cotton prefolds headed my way and I have one Grovia cover so far.  I need more covers for sure!

I use planetwise pail liners and have 2 planet wise wet bags and 2 more WAHM wetbags on the way as I find the small PW wetbag too small for daycare and the medium is too big.

If you are okay buying used, there are tons of CD swap boards on FB.  I got my whole stash so far and assessories for under $400.  Sometimes the diapers are prepped and just never used and some even can be found NIP.  I'm also trying out Zorb inserts along with my MF as the MF can sometimes have a stench about it and isn't as absorbable as other inserts.  I have a feeling I might switch out my MF inserts for the next LO, too, probably for Hemp or bamboo.

  • I do both!!! With DS I cloth diapered at home and used disposables on the go. I will do the same with this one. I always liked the ability to just throw them away when we were out and about. I liked the prefolds with covers during the day but at night time the pocket diapers were amazing because they hold way more.

  • I'm thinking about it but haven't done enough research yet. Plus i haven't discussed this with DH yet. I'm trying to break him in gently with all this baby stuff... i think his head is still reeling from when i showed him how expensive strollers can be! ;-)

This for sure!  Plus, toddlers like to undo the velcro and take their diapers off!

  • Yes!  We have used cds from the newborn stage with DS. I love them! I also agree with everyone else that said to try to different brands.

  • We are about to start CDing DD. I have one a fellow bumpie made me and then we are going to try various pocket diapers and AI2s. I definitely want to do the trial on Jillian's Drawers. It's so much better than buying 1 of 10 different brands!

I'm right here with you.  I'm very interested but have a lot of research and convincing to do :)

  • We started DD around 5 months with the Jillian's Drawers trial and loved it. We'll probably rent new born diapers this time around. There are places that you can rent nb fitteds since babies aren't in them for too long, then you return them and some will give you a credit towards buying new diapers for your bigger baby. I can't wait for new born fluff!
