Pregnant after a Loss

How rhythmic is your LO's movement?

I keep feeling maybe 3 or 4 kicks/punches/etc in a row and trying to decide if it is hiccups or just a repeated movement.  Normally I wouldn't care, but I read somewhere about too many hiccups indicating a cord problem, so now I am paranoid.  Do you ever get those repeated movements, sometimes spaced evenly?  I keep thinking she is still small enough that after the 3-4 I feel she is just moving away and it is really hiccups.  I am freaking myself out.

  • For what it's worth, my DD used to get hiccups even after she was born, so they couldn't have been caused by a cord problem.  I have never heard of hiccups being an indication of a problem.  I have always heard that it is a sign the baby is maturing and getting ready for outside breaths. And if hiccups are a sign of a cord problem, then there are a ton of us women on here with baby's with cord problems.

However, when my lo gets hiccups, they usually last a lot longer than 3 or 4 at a time.  It is usually every couple of seconds for a few minutes.

  • Mine has gotten them 2 times. But it was so faint. It was faster than my hiccups and not as jerky.

If you have the hiccups more than 4 times a day. You need to observed for cord compression.

  • I asked my OB and high risk dr about this bc I read the same thing here on the bump. They said there is no correlation between hiccups and cord problems and there is no data supporting it. When babies practice breathing the diaphragm like any muscle can spasm!!

That is good to hear!  I read it here too and totally believed it.  If I remember right, hiccups in general aren't a problem but if it is daily at 30+ weeks or more than 3-4 times in 24 hours it is a problem.   ::shrug:: I guess it is one of those weird medical rumors, I don't know.

  • Hmmm I don't think mine gets them more than 3-4 times a day.  But I would say almost daily once or twice. Some days I don't notice them at all.  I will ask my ob on wednesday when I go back.  But I've never heard of this and I've felt hiccups for many weeks and knock on wood, baby is still moving well throughout the day and has been good at all of the checkups.  I've had 1 or 2 non-stress tests since 25 weeks too.

  • I read the same thing about the cord problem and hiccups on TB. I asked my OB about it and she said that it's one of the most ridiculous things she's ever heard. Hiccups happen when they are practice breathing so it's good for them to get the hiccups... it shows that they are developing and practicing breathing. I got all freaked out when I read it too but now that I think about it, it doesn't really make much sense that the cord would have anything to do with hiccups.

  • I've never had hiccups only be 3-4 in a row, they always last much longer. I have felt her kick in rapid succession a few times in a row though in a way that could be called rhythmic.

I worry about the cord thing too, but hiccups are normal, and 3-4 are really not too many. Try not to worry!
