Do you belong to a credit union?

With all of the upcoming changes to the banking industry and the increased fees and minimum balance requirements we are thinking of switching all of our accounts to a credit union.

Which credit do you belong to? Can anyone join or do you have to be affiliated through work or an organization? Pros/Cons?

Thanks

Re: Do you belong to a credit union?

  • We belong to Delta Community Credit Union. They used to be just for Delta employees, but a couple years ago, they changed their name (from Delta Employee Credit Union) and made it available to everyone. I love them. Our account was compromised last month when someone withdrew more than $1K from our account from an ATM in England (Still don't know how that happened because we both had our cards with us). DH reported it on Saturday, and all the money was back in our account no later than the following Tuesday. My only complaint is there aren't enough branches, but they just put one on Dallas Hwy (by Target), before then, DH had to do all the banking at the airport.

  • I belong to 3! I have been a member of Georgia's Own Credit Union (used to be Ga Telco) since high school, and I worked at Motorola and Emory, both of which had credit unions so I still have an account at each. We do all of our loans thru the credit union. Some of them are community based, so if you live/work in the area you can join. I would check with the local ones around you, we love the Credit Union.

  • I'm a member of Georgia's Own Credit Union for several years now and can't say enough great things about them.  They were wonderful to deal with three years ago when my purse was stolen and the bad guys wiped out my checking account.  I would hate to imagine the hoops I would have had to jump through if I had been dealing with one of the big banks instead.  The biggest downside is there is no branch near me so anything I've had to do (ie car loans/selling a car) I've had to drive to Atlanta, but really it was never a big deal.

  • We belong to Emory's credit union and have been very happy with it.  I love not having as many fees and hassles as I did with BOA.

  • We belong to Navy Fed Credit Union. It's great, but the only thing is that there are not enough branches/ATM we can use. Our car loan is thru Associated Credit Union - they're alright. I can't say much about them, but credit unions are really the best way to bank IMO.

  • Another vote for Delta.  Although you know how I feel about their mortgage dept :-P  But otherwise, we LOVE using them.  We have pretty much closed all our other bank accounts and use them exclusively.  We have no issues w/ limited ATMs b/c we just go to the Presto machines at Publix or get cashback from a grocery store or whatever.  They have great customer service too!

  • We belong to Credit Union of GA (formerly Maco).  I know it is for KSU students and teachers but not sure if that it the same and it is open to everyone anymore.  We really like them.  We just refinanced our car with them and got such a great rate, much better than what we were paying with Honda.

  • We have belonged to Xceed Financial Credit Union through DH's work for the past few years for one of our savings accounts and we just moved our  "fun" checking account over to it a few weeks ago.  So far, I've had no complaints.  We still have our "house" checking account at a bank because DH gets his check direct deposited so no fees but I have a feeling we may end up moving that over soon as well.  I'm definitely a credit union convert!
  • Georgia's Own for many moons (when it was Georgia Telco).  Love them and have no complaints.
  • Another vote for CUs, I use two.  The one in GA is Emory CU.

  • i belong to state employees/georgia united (for savings and car note) but there is a delta community right next to DD's daycare and i've been eyeing it lately (for checking) since i think they have more ATMs around town and i'm basically over there five days a week.

my mom has been with navy federal for like EVER and she loves it but they have less ATMs also.

i think what you need to look for depends on how you use the account. i never use my savings, just went in a couple of times for the car loan and used their buyer (awesome!).

for checking, though, i need a lot more features, like online bill pay, great website, and accessible ATMs with low usage fees. i'm definitely making the switch from BofA.

  • I belong to LGE Community (had my savings accounts there since I was 3) and Delta Community.  I also work for the Shared Branching Network in IT.  We network all of the CU's together so if you are a member of Delta Community and you are in Washington and need to get your money you can go to cuservicecenter.com and find a location near you that will service you.  Give them your member number and you can pay your loans, deposit and withdraw money just like it is your own CU.  Really, the only thing you can't do is open a new account.  The service is amazing too.  Interest rates stay low.  I have always loved CU's even before I worked for them.
