Middle Name Dilemma

I think we're pretty set on a first name for this baby, we both like Delaney and Laney as a nickname.  I can think of nice middle names, but the ones I like have no real significance to us.  J's is the same as mine (Louise) and is a family name, and I like the way it flows.

DH told me yesterday that we should use my maiden name (4 letters) as the MN and then use his stepdad's last name for #3's MN.  Okay, but I don't love the way that my maiden name flows with Delaney but at least it would have some significance.  The real issue is that as of right now, I have no plans to have another child and have told DH this but he doesn't really seem to get it.  His thoughts are that who knows how I'll feel in a few years.  This is a whole separate topic (I think 2 will be plenty for us, space concerns, money!, or the cholestasis of pregnancy issue), but I'm pretty set on being done.  So I keep thinking, don't hold out hope of using the step-dad's last name for #3, but he doesn't get it.

What would you do?  I know we don't need a solution right away but it would be nice to have it figured out.  I really don't want to use the step-dad's last name with Delaney because its 7 letters long and doesn't flow well with the other names.

Re: Middle Name Dilemma

  • Eh - I didn't worry about flow that much. Evan's middle name is David, after my Dad. The are both two syllables and have the "v" in the middle so if I had to pick a middle name out of nowhere...I definitely wouldn't have picked one that was so similar like that. But it's my Dad's name and I LOVE that he has it.

Choose names that you love - they will fit perfectly after you call her that for the first time and you wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Can you alter your last name at all? Like if we have a girl I really want her mn to be Vivian after DH's grandmother whose maiden name was Viviani - and I don't care what the names board would say about it - it's still like naming her after her GG. So you could always do something like that.

  • Naming you child is such a personal decision, what works for one person may not work for another.  My maiden name has a masculine feel, so it wouldn't have worked for us, but if yours works, I'd go for it.  It obviously had meaning, and would be paying tribute to a whole family, not just one family member. Not that anything is wrong with that!

That being said, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Laney as a nickname! It goes very well with your DD's name.  Good luck!

    Thanks!

I think Telyco has a good idea but they're both tough names to adapt in some way or another, and both have a masculine feel to them too.
