Bumbo seats - bad?

So our Physical Therapist told us today that we should get rid of the bumbo and that it is terrible for LO's spine and their development. Has anyone else heard this?

I don't pay attention to much that's "bad for us" b/c someone has something against everything... IMO. I don't think it could do too much damage unless you sit them in it all day every day, but that's just me.

But to answer your question OP, No, I haven't heard that before.

I just think they're a waste of money. My LO will tolerate it for 3 minutes and then tries to roll out of it. So, I don't use it at all.

I agree with PP's. Just don't leave LO in the Bumbo all day long. 5 mins here and there is fine.

I've actually heard that a lot, our pediatrician specifically asked if we were using one (we aren't, I saw no reason to shell out $40 for it), she said good because it causes all sorts of physical development problems. My friends pediatrician said this as well.

I have heard that. Bumbos are bad, jumperoos are bad, jolly jumpers are bad, Baby Bjorn are bad. Everything is bad.

We have both a Bumbo and Jumperoo. I'm going to say that his time in the Ergo cancels it out.

My MIL insists that Bumbos make babies bowlegged. However, my 4 straight-legged nieces & nephews dispute that, IMO.

DD sits in hers for a few minutes each day & loves it. Everything in moderation.

We have a family friend who works with a child development program inside of children's services that deals with infants. They give Bumbo seats out to babies who are behind in their development because of parents not caring enough to work with them to help them.

So, actually, just the opposite is what I've heard.

I think if a baby stays in ANY position/toy/seat for too long it can be bad. I'm not worried at all. In fact, I wish my LO would have spent more time in hers, but unfortunately, her thighs are HUGE and she got stuck by the thighs when I put her in it! LOL

2 things:

1: Our physical therapist told us the same thing (we see her for torticollis). She said they weren't bad as long as you used them for very short intervals, but any longer than 5-10 minutes at a time is not good because they need to be sitting straight up, not slumped.

2: Don't buy a new one because you can only use them for so long and they're easy to clean.

Because of #1, we are opting not to get one at all.

I've heard they're good for short durations of eating as well, but it's better if your baby can support more of their own weight so they don't slump.

I have never heard of the bowlegged thing, that's just odd.

Our daughter is in PT for tort as well and her therapist said not to use the bumbo or the jump a roo. I felt like a bad mom, my daughter would play in her jumper maybe 5 mins a day..the PT said she would never put her children in one. I do agree with the thought of everything in moderation and after she is discharged from PT and her neck is corrected I will probably let her go in a couple times a week. She sits on her own so the bumbo is a non-issue for us.

I have heard that too but we use it. Now that he is too big for the swing and bouncy seat it is one of the only places I have to put him for a minute or two sometimes. I asked my pedi about it at our 4 month appt and she said as long as it was in moderation and we were still getting plenty of floor time and practice sitting outside the bumbo it is fine. DS has been using his since 3 months and is already sitting independently!

UGHHH Everything is BADDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!

You know what, way before DD could sit on her own, she had a flat spot on her head. So the bumbo and lots of tummy time helped her. And guess what, it saved her from a helmet.

Now, she can sit on her own, roll around, and almost crawl.

They are worried that a bumbo will reach up and eat your child. Just like the jumperoos, bouncies and tv. Everything in moderation people.

Everything in moderation. I love how people can find research to support all this stuff but the problem is they forget the disclaimer: "Research conducted on infants who spent 23 hours a day in said device."

I certainly wouldn't leave my little one in it for long periods of time (and he wouldn't tolerate it anyways) but we put him in it on the table while we eat dinner. We're starting the routine of all of us sitting for dinner and he's watching us eat and get used to mealtimes.

I certainly don't think the 15 minutes will kill him. But, he's not a big fan anyways, so I certainly can't abuse it.

Everything is bad for babies according to some study or another. If it was not for the bumbo or the jumper, DH and I would never prepare or eat dinner. 10-15 mins a day in each is not the end of the world, and it helps my sanity when I can put her down for a few mins.

Our PT said the Bumbo was a great source to use for DS when he was learning how to sit on his own. The differing opinions is interesting.

Technically they are "baby sitters."

DD only sits in hers for a few minutes each day, and I can't imagine how that would cause any long-term physical effect. She doesn't really slump in it though.
