C-sections

? about compression stockings

I know I didnt have them for my first c-section but I read in a journal somewhere they a small segment of hospitals are starting to use them for c-sec mommas in the first 24hrs. after birth- anyone use them?

I am going to mention it to my doc tomorrow but just curious if this was catching on- or if i should just go an buy them myself...

Re: ? about compression stockings

  • I had compression stockings with both my sections (3 years ago and 1 year ago).  I kept them on until I was able to get up and walk around.  I would definitely ask if they started using them.  Mine were actually put on before both my sections, so I would ask about that as well.

  • I had something like this after my c/s, which I assumed was standard, but maybe not?

  • they used them on me with my 2nd c/s.  The ones where air flows around your legs every few mins to make sure you don't develop DVT (I think that's what it's called).

Yep! This is what I had! I just thought it was common practice throughout any hospitals, but maybe not? I know even after I had my gallbladder out I had to wear them because of the risk of DVT after any surgery...OP I would ask your OB about them for sure though.

  • I had the ones with the air that are hooked up to the foot of the bed. I had to wear them for 24 hours post c/s because I had to stay hooked up to a mag drip and stay in bed for 24 hours. I am not sure what the protocol would have been if I wouldn't have been on the IV and all hooked up post section.

  • Yepper! They put the stockings on as they were prepping me for surgery in the OR. They remained on my legs for I'd say right around 24 hours. When my SIL visited the day after I had DS, she said she had to wear them, too, and she had her daughter 2 1/2 years ago. I grew to like them...but by around the 20th hour, I wanted them off!

  • I had to wear them.  Had them on for what seemed like an eternity...most likely 36-ish hours though.  I was told I needed them because I'm a big girl and the risks of blood clots are higher because of my weight.

  • They had them on me for about 15 hours.   They help prevent blood clots.   Trust me, you do not want to have to deal with clots.   I had complications after my c-section and was in the hospital for almost a month.   I developed clots on my arm from a PICC line and then a small one on my leg since I was in bed so much.   I'm unable to breastfeed because of the medication I'm on for the clots(coumadin)   I'll be on it until sometime in Dec...longer if I still have clots then.

  • They gave them to me at the hosp. I had almost forgotten about those sexy things!
