We have the Homedics Sound Spa. The motor on the revolving light show does break down, but the light still works and we use it as a night light. We actually have two of these machines - we keep one in our room so whichever of us gets to sleep in on Sunday morning can use it. We only used a monitor briefly, and it didn't annoy me. It's white noise, after all.
We actually have small fans in both the kids rooms. We used the sleep sheep sound machine, but anytime it shut off, DD got restless. Once we put a fan in each of their rooms, both kids sleep wonderfully.
We have the Marpac Sleepmate in DD's room as well as ours. It sounds just like a fan and you can adjust the volume of it. It doesn't come across the monitor very loud. We'll be getting another one from Amazon for DD2's room.

We have the Marpac too and love it!! We have the sleep sheep but it just doesn't get the job done. I also plan on buying another one.

We have the homemedics SS 2000 sound machine ($20.00 at Wal-Mart) and it works great. We already got one for the 2nd baby. We also use a Graco monitor and the white noise doesn't bother me. Sometimes when we're watching tv it is annoying but I think it helps me sleep a little better.

I think we need the white noise just as much as LO does :-)
We just use an old alarm clock that happens to have a few different white noise settings, nothing fancy.
