Is this bogus advice

So we just followed up with the pedi (saw someone we had never seen before) and they went ahead and did his weight check since it was scheduled for Friday. He is back up and past his birth weight and then some. I asked if I could stop waking him up at night to feed him and she said no, I needed to wake him every 3-4 hours. I asked how long I was supposed to be doing that for and she said through his 2 month appt at least. Really?!?! First, Lila was sleeping a good 8 hour stretch by then. Second, what is wrong with feeding him when he is hungry at night if he is eating well during the day? Third, I have to imagine that after months of me waking him up regularly to eat he is going to default to that program. FWIW, I have to wake him for probably 80% of his night feeds now and he can hardly be bothered to wake up to eat so I assume he would go longer on his own.

Re: Is this bogus advice

  • I'd say bogus advice..but not 100% sure..when we discharge patients home from the hospital, we recommend the every 2-4 hours during the day then on demand at night...encouraging at least 1 night time feed...and thats something that our pedi's and LC's agreed on being fine..

  • Yeah, I'd stop if he's not waking up on his own in the night to eat.

  • Someone told me once they were 9lbs or more it was ok to not wake them at night. I have no idea if that's accurate or not, however. I never got to find out because N woke up every 2 hrs like clockwork.

  • According to me:  it's bogus advice.  I never woke mine.  We never had issues.

  • Honestly, I never woke either one up to eat.  Ever.  Sleeping 6 hours during the day?  OK.  Want to STTN?  Done!

I mean I assume he would wake up at some point but I have been setting my alarm for every 3 hours and waking him up. I'm probably pissing him off.

  • She started STTN just as she passed birth weight. We do not wake her and we were told to feed on demand, and that meant she'd wake up and demand if she wanted to feed lol.

  • I wouldn't keep waking him up. Not that we ever had the issue of him sleeping for more than three hours. :glares at TLF through monitor:

  • With both of mine I was able to quit waking them once they were above their birth weights.  They ate plenty during the day to make up for what they missed while sleeping.

  • If he's still gaining weight then it's not a problem. Go a week without waking him up and re-weigh him.

Weigh him today on your bathroom scale and then in a week.

  • I was told once they are over their birthweight it's fine to not wake any longer.

    Yes.

  • Our pedi said not to wake her at night to feed and she was still 5oz under bw at the time.

  • I saw bogus! My pedi has always told us we can stop once we're upto/past birth weight.

  • They never told us to wake him up to feed him. Though I never asked either, we've just been feeding on demand. He was waking up to feed every 3 or 4 hours for a while, this last week he hasn't and it's been lovely.

Same here.  Our pedi always said that if they're sleeping they're not hungry and if they're gaining fine/plenty of wet/dirty diapers, it's all good.

  • I had to wake every 2 to feed, but he was a preemie and only 5 lbs. when we took him home.  I had to supplement. I remember he slept 5 hours once and I freaked.  It sounds like he is gaining well enough to not have to wake during the night.  I call bogus.

  • With both boys (different practices) we were told not wake them, just let them feed on demand.  Though I think we had to start waking Ezra to feed when he stopped gaining weight, but that was for a reason.  A healthy, normal sized baby should be able to just eat on demand.

  • Another vote for bogus.  We were told as soon as baby gets back to birth weight, no need to wake them up.

  • We were told (and everything I've read says) once they're back up to birth weight, let them sleep. DS took 5 weeks to get back up to birth weight, but the LC finally told us at 4 weeks we could stop waking him up. He slept 7 hours that night, and it was heaven.

Some random weight isn't a good measure. Some babies are higher than that at birth.

We were told by the NICU staff once he got back to birth weight (which was before he was released) he could go to on demand.

Yeah, Lila wasn't 9 lbs when she started STTN. Nolan was bigger than she was at two months when he was born. He dropped into the 8 lb range but he's gained over a pound in the last week and is over his birth weight so I think we are fine in that regard. Although I am sure tonight is going to be a disaster since we have been running around since 10 am (finally home) and be hasn't been able to do his usual evening cluster feeding.

  • I say eff that noise.  My boys were both N's size and the pedi told me to wake them every 4 hours until they were up to birth weight (which was maybe a week old, tops).  After that, let them sleep.  Gabe was doing 6 hour stretches by 6 weeks old, and STTN (9p-6a) by 2 months.

Isaac on the other hand.... well, he slept 6 hours straight for the first time ever last week.  And it hasn't happened since.  Most of the time it's 3-4 hours, and he isn't shy about telling me he's hungry.  I say take whatever sleep N will give you!

  • I say you're fine. We were told to wake her at first only because she lost so much in the hospital. Once we proved she was gaining fine at some weight checks, they said to let her sleep at night. Turned out not to be a problem because she was insistent on eating every 2 hours on the dot.
