2nd Trimester

Who hasn't stopped drinking coffee?

Okay, so I was really strict about the "no-no" list the first time around but this time it's harder to take so seriously for some reason.  I still have a cup of coffee every other day.  I can tell this is irritating my husband but to be honest- TMI alert- I can't poop unless I drink a little coffee.

Is it so bad?  I'm going to ask my Dr. at my appt. on Monday but have you gals all really stopped drinking coffee?

Re: Who hasn't stopped drinking coffee?

  • In my first pregnancy, I was very diligent about not drinking coffee.  I didn't even drink decaf because it had trace amounts of caffeine.

This pregnancy has been different, I have a cup of coffee (or a soda) probably 2-3 times a week.  Most OB's will tell you that one serving a day is completely fine.  It's really not as off limits as a lot of people think.

  • Coffee grosses me out right now, but I am drinking other caffeinated beverages. Not everyday, but when I want them. I cut it all out at first b/c I was really paranoid after a previous early loss (I was paranoid about everything), but I started adding it back in around 10 weeks. My OB says it's perfectly fine.
  • I'm not a coffee girl - but I am still partaking in my 1 can of diet coke per day. My doctor said 1 caffeinated beverage per day was okay.

  • I have stopped only because I can't stop if I start. I love the stuff and decaf just doesn't cut it for me. Bleh. I can't wait for a strong latte.

  • I have semi-cut out coffee but not by personal conviction - by my stomach which says "if you put a hot cup of tar on me each morning I'm going to revolt all day long, b!tch!" (my stomach is no one to mince words).  I haven't cut out caffeine, just limit it to one caffeinated item per day.

  • My sister had coffee every day until about 38 weeks. Her doctor said it was fine for her.

She has coffee every morning and she BFs. I havent heard much about this being a problem so I don't know if people avoid it while breastfeeding too(I don't like coffee so I've never looked into it). But speaking of coffee and pooping, when she doesn't drink coffee her LO gets constipated.

I don't drink coffee but I do still drink pop. I asked my doctor about it and he said as long as I wasn't going overboard it was fine. That if I did give it up all of a sudden it would be harder on the baby since it was used to it already.

  • I have a cup every morning...or I'd have serious intestinal problems at this point! My doctor said this was fine.

  • I am 22 weeks and drink coffee. I've switched to 1/2 caf 1/2 decaf in the morning though because the caffeine definitely started affecting my sleep more than pre-pregnancy. I have coffee probably 4-5 mornings a week and will have a cup of decaf after a nice dinner if at a restaurant.

  • I'm drinking it, but I have cut way, way down. During the first tri I couldn't even stomach the smell of coffee, so I had none then. Since I've gotten my appetite back, I've had a "small" coffee every day, like a 12-ozer, but usually I only drink about half of it. The caffeine really kicks in a lot more than it did before and I don't want to be jittery nor do I want the baby to be jittery.

  • I have a half of cup every morning and that is all the caffeine I have in a day. I asked my OB at my first appointment and he said that was fine. You can have up to 300 mg a day and be ok.
  • It is not a no-no. You can have up to 300 mg of caffeine a day.

I have had a cup (sometimes two on weekends) of coffee everyday with both of my pregnancies.  My DD was 10 lbs at birth, so I can safely say that it did not affect her growth.

  • yeah Im still on the caffeine too. I have a cup of tea every AM just bc I prefer it to coffee. BUt I felt like some coffee today, so I did have that instead. Im not worried.

  • My doctor says two small cups a day are fine.  I HAVE to have one small cup to function and get my two boys ready for school in the morning...then in the afternoon when I start dragging I usually have one small coke.

  • I still drink a cup of coffee 2 or 3 mornings a week. My perinatologist actually recommended it since I've been having migraines. He said it's a lot safer than any other medication they can give me for it (well, with the exception of tylenol which does absolutely nothing for my migraines), and it honestly makes a big difference. Don't sweat it! A little caffeine in moderation is considered perfectly safe.

  • I'd stopped, but my dietician actually suggested I have a small cup daily for constipation instead of the laxative. So far, it works better than miralax. I probably won't drink it everyday, but it's back in the rotation.
  • I allow myself a cup of coffee on days that I close at work. I told my doc she wasn't worried, being at work that late i get tired and that cup is a lifesaver!

  • I actually looked this up because I am a one cup a day girl. The maximum dose of caffeine per day for a pregnant woman is 200mg per day and each cup of coffee contains anywhere from 90-120mg of caffeine (depending if it's instant or percolated). I have kept with my one cup of instant coffee a day (in order to comply with my bowel habits) and have had no concerns voiced by my physician. If you want it, have it (in moderation of course if you were a multi-pot per day drinker). Have a great pregnancy!!

  • To be honest I am in the same boat as you with the TMI. But then again I cant live with out my coffee and being my fave season and all my fave flavors are out. With DD I didn't drink much if any but heck I'm pregnant not broken and if someone has a problem with what I eat or drink they can kiss my little white tooshy. My DH backs me up also because his mom yelled at me for eating California Rolls and he went off on her. He was like she can eat what ever she wants and the doc said that they are perfectly fine because its not raw lol. He is a dork.

  • I have one "mug" of coffee every morning (it's measured to be 1 and 1/4 to 1/5 cup depending on my amount of creamer). This is down from about 5 prepregnancy.

I've had 3 ultrasounds and my baby has only one head in each one.

  • I drink a diet coke and a tea per day. In my very uneducated opinion, the biggest thing to watch our for is caffeine withdrawl when the baby is a newborn. For me it wasn't an issue since I BF'd for 17 months then gradually weaned them off. Again- a very uneducated completely made up opinion- but it makes sense to me :)
  • Me.  ESPecially when I know I need to "go" or suffer the wrath.  LOL  I was so crazy about it with DS, but my sis has 5 kids and she craved fraps with her 5th.  Had one almost every day.  And that kiddo is FINE.  I DO keep it down to one cup or 1/2 decaf at the coffee place.

  • I really do not understand this at all. Coffee/caffeine is NOT a "no-no".

I follow the rule of 200mg a day or less of caffeine. One cup of coffee is around 100-150mg. Usually I have a vanilla latte or a cup of normal coffee every single day and did so with my first pregnancy too.

  • Yep.  I have one cup a day and my OB doesn't even flinch at the thought.  It's definitely a personal decision but I haven't really cut anything out entirely except drinking.  My doctor has told me to be balanced and eat healthy which I like to think I do anyway.  So, one cup a day (which also helps me poop) and if I want a turkey sandwich once in a while, I eat a turkey sandwich.

  • I have two-ish cups a day.  This is the third pregnancy and so far the first two haven't turned out abnormal ;).  There really isn't anything that I stay far away from. Food intake (IMO), is all about moderation :)

  • I drink some coffee, decaf when ordering it and regular/ decaf depending on the flavor I'm using up, but not daily and not too many cups.  I'm good with moderation and, for a while, it made me feel really sick and I just didn't drink coffee then.

Today I am pregnant & I love my baby!
  • The only time I was concerned about drinking my morning coffee was during the first tri because of its possible link to miscarriage.  My doctor has said from day 1 try to stop altogether but the best I could do was decrease from 12 oz to 6 oz per day.  Like you, will be constipated if I don't have at least a little bit but more so, brain can't function properly without either as I made the mistake of finding out when trying to go without any one day.  I'm now 27w and still have just my 6 oz of organic, regular coffee.  Personally, I'd rather have less regular coffee than mix decaf to it because of the processing that occurs to make the coffee decaf.  This will be my first child so hopefully he turns out ok despite the fact his mom could kick every other "forbidden" item but her coffee!

  • I had to leave for work an hour and a half before clock-in time at 7a - and had to be up an hour before that to make sure I wasn't going to get sick. I asked my OB about coffee and she allowed me a small {regular} coffee a day. Or, I could have one medium Mocha a week with no other coffee introduced. At 25 weeks - coffee tastes horrible. I can't stand the smell of it either {and it breaks my heart!}. I've suddenly switched to hot chocolate and am loving it. :) Good luck to you!

  • I have about a cup a week.  Minimal quantities of caffeine isn't going to hurt anything.  Just stay under 10 oz a day.

  • I never had a drop with DS but this one I drink a half- caf latte every afternoon and it makes my migraines go away.  With a 2 year old I can't make it through the day with a migraine and I figure coffee is more natural than tylenol.
