Success after IF

OB scared the bleep out of me!

Just had a quick heartbeat check today and baby is fine but he warned me that they are seeing an increase in listeria cases. He told me to heat up deli meat (I just avoid it all together) but to also avoid all raw veggies unless I know for a fact that they've been washed well.  So basically no salads at restaurants or salad bars.  Great.  I eat salad from the salad bar at work almost daily.  And i don't always wash the bagged lettuce, which he says is the worse offender.

I asked him what the symptoms of listeria were and he said that that was the issue - very few or none until its too late.  Women have been coming in for appointments and there is no longer a heartbeat without even knowing there has been an issue.  Many times you don't get physically sick until long after exposure.

Um, thanks Doc.  Totally freaked out now on top of my already nervous tendencies.  Anyone else hear this?  To this extreme?

  • My OB was big about listeria, too (though I will admit that I didn't always listen very well).  There was recently a very big outbreak tied to cantaloupe in several states -- and since the skin carries it and can't be washed very well (and it transfers to the inside when you cut it), lots of people were getting sick.  I think the bottom line is to wash all fruits and veggies well (even if you don't eat the skin/peel), heat up lunch meat, and avoid soft cheese and soft-serve ice cream (this was the one I had a BIG problem with).

ETA:  Wanted to add that it is rare, and really only dangerous to the elderly, those who are pregnant, and those with compromised immune systems.  But this recent outbreak made it big news everywhere.

Yes, I heard about the cantaloupe and  actually threw one away from our fridge several weeks ago b/c of the news but I guess I just didn't think about the raw veggies part!

    Didn't mean to scare anyone!

  • Great, an excuse not to eat any healthy foods now...not what I need.

    HA!!

Chaucer, I'd be nervous too...I didn't  stress about it while preg, but getting a warning about rising number of cases in your area...I'd stick to other food options.  Sorry!!!
