S/O Baby bottles

There was a question in the PG check in about how many bottles to have and I was surprised to hear so many say they stuck with 4oz bottles!

This time around we are going straight to 8 oz bottles:  You don't have to fill them up but we were using more than 4 oz bottles pretty much from his first day at day care and we used those 8 oz bottles way more than the 4 oz bottles.

Am I the only one with a chunker kid who liked his food?

Re: S/O Baby bottles

  • Not knowing what I'll need, I asked for a mix of 4oz and 8oz bottles. I was told it's easier to keep track (for whatever reason) using the 4oz bottles when they're smaller. Also, using more 4oz bottles when pumping will (again, from what I was told) reduce the amount of breast milk waste as apparently it doesn't keep in the fridge for too long.

This whole FTM thing is confusing!

  • I've got 4 oz bottle that he eats out of (5oz bottles for pumping) but my light eater is only eating 2-2.5oz at a time.  When I'm pumping, I store it all in 8oz bags and divvy it up in the morning for day.

supposedly the amount of breastmilk they drink in a sitting doesn't increase over time like it does with formula - breastmilk just changes to meet their needs

I disagree with this: I pumped/BF exclusively till 8 months and then supplimented with formul so we saw my son go from about 4 oz to at least 8 per bottle!  So yes, they do increase the amount they eat with BM as well as with formula.

My personal opinion is not to buy too many 4 oz bottles because you might have a kid who eats a lot or you migh have a kid who will get by on 4 oz bottles. Just buy a few and see what your needs might be.

  • With both kids I only ever used 4 or 5 oz bottles.  (Avent 4 oz with #1 and Born Free 5oz with #2) Audrey would go the entire day at daycare and only ever take 4oz and most of the time half that came home.  I learned quickly to stop sending 3 -4oz bottles since they never got touched.  (plus I had to have a huge freezer stash to allow for the extensive traveling I did when she was a baby)

It was a struggle for her to even take the bottle though..she wait for it on tap and just barely got by with bottles when I was gone.

Ryan was a CHUNK (16.5 # @8wks) and he too only ever took 4 oz all day at daycare.

Of course I didn't know these quirks until after they were born.  Good thing I never opened the other bottles I had...I just took them back.

I did buy a few 11 oz super large bottles and bought those caps to go where the nipple was and soley used them for storage of pumped milk when I was traveling.  Helped to keep my pump bottles free and I could divy up into bags every few days vs having to do it every day.

  • We had both sizes, but Lucy quickly outgrew the 4oz size bottles.  I think by about 3-4 mos.  But we got them before we knew that.  We'll use them this time around if we need them just because we already have them.

But if I had to buy all new bottles, I'd just get the bigger ones too.

  • Ella only drank 3-4 oz at a time until she started formula at 9 months. I only bought 4, 4oz (I think you could get 5-6 oz in them though) bottles before she was born... then when we knew what she needed we bought more.

  • We used both the 4oz and 8oz bottles. Jake is 11 months old and currently drinks 8oz at a time. I liked having the smaller 4oz bottles in the beginning.

  • We have 6-12oz and 1-8oz this time. He usually eats somewhere between 4 and 6oz so we could have gotten all 8oz but it seemed more practical to just get the big ones!
  • I tended to use the 4 oz. ones when I was supplementing after nursing, and the 8 oz. ones when I was flat out giving him a formula bottle or pumped milk. I'll buy a mix again this time since I want to get more Dr. Brown's and had a bunch of Ventaire ones with Collin.

We have the Dr. Brown's bottles but obviously have yet to use them. How do you like yours? Are the parts difficult to clean?

I loved them. I had a dishwasher basket for the parts and just popped them in there, but when I had to clean them by hand, it wasn't any big deal. I had Playtex Ventaire bottles at first and they leaked and also caused trapped air for my poor kid! DB were fantastic and my lactation consultant suggested we started with a preemie nipple to help with the flow, and they were great. I'll be buying more DB for No. 2 because I seem to have lost a few along the way.

  • I got one three pack of 4 oz bottles, and use the pumping bottles too. LO will drink 4- filled up 4 oz bottles (I think it's about 5 oz) when I work during the day. I can see her going to 8 oz bottles later, but I don't want a bunch of bottles around since she only needs them once or twice a week.

  • WOW, my kids were the only crazy ones to only ever take 4 oz all day.  I even tried to switch to sippy's instead at 10-11 months to see if they'd take more with a spout vs a bottle nipple and nope.  Crazy Kids!

  • The only times I used the 8 ozers were when all the 4 ozers were dirty.  Sammy didn't ever take to the bottle very good, just enough to get by until the tap was open again :)

Max never took huge bottles either, it was rare for him to do 5 or 6 oz, usually 4ish. And Miss Anna who so far takes zero oz doesn't seem like she'll be needing big bottles either. :/

  • DD only ever used 5 oz bottles. We never had any that were bigger than that. She would take 3 bottles a day, but never more than 3-4oz at a time.
