Turkey dogs and grapes

When do you stop cutting these up?  I cut into quarters still since according to his poo, he's not chewing up very much yet even with four molars.  I know it depends on the child, but when did you stop cutting up?

Re: Turkey dogs and grapes

  • Lucy is 20 mos. and I still cut grapes in half, and hot  dogs into little bites, otherwise I get a little paranoid she's going to choke and start fishing the giant pieces out of her mouth.

  • For M we cut his hot dog in 1/2 length wise, then put it in the bun, so it isn't as fat, and fits well. Depending on the grapes, I still cut in 1/2 for him also.

We had a friend of a friend of ours 5 year old die at a church function on a grape. Scared the crap out of me.

  • DD is almost 2 1/2 and I dont cut up either... but I dont let her have them as run around the house with snacks (like I do with crackers or string cheese). She has to sit at the table and I sit with her.
  • I am super-paranoid about hot dogs since I choked really bad on them TWICE as a child...I still remember running all the way downstairs to my Mom in the laundry room choking and needing the heimlich! So yeah...I'll be cutting these indefinitely. I JUST stopped cutting up his bananas. Better safe than sorry.
  • I totally thought this post was going to be about boy parts.

We still cut up bananas and hot dogs, but I stopped doing grapes when little sister was born just because I had no time or energy.

Yes- scary. BUT its one of those freak accident things ... like the kid that was killed in a car accident w/ his sippy cup. Something to be aware of, but not let it make you paranoid. Dont get me wrong, There is no playing with grapes and hotdogs. She sits at the table or with an adult when she eats them, and all people that she is around on a reg basis have taken infant/toddler CPR and know what to do in the incident of a choking.
