We're planning a move to Massachusetts and the best hospitals & practices are undeniably in the city. What is your limit on how far of a drive you'd be comfortable with (time-wise)? I'm trying to figure out if it's better to have a longer drive at a superior facility/dr. or just be closer.
And...by the way...I'm atlantic. We've known for about four weeks that we're having twins and found out yesterday that they are mo/di. We have an awesome almost-two-year old and we currently live in Austin (which is awesome but we have no family here). I've been storing up my questions since I hadn't outted myself yet on my local board, so I may be asking a lot! I have been lurking though and already have learned lots of helpful info.
So, thanks in advance!
Re: How far is too far for dr/hospital? (and and intro)
Welcome and congratulations on your twins!
My doctor was an hour away but could be up to 2 hours pending traffic. I was ok with that.
As it happened, I was in his office for a visit, got home then my water broke. My labor was fast and furious and I still had no issues getting there on time.
4 Fresh IVF cycles + 1 FET where embies didn't survive the thaw = 2 perfect little men!
sFET 11/9/11 - Beta 11/18 BFP!
Don't give towns but how far are you talking about?
For me, I would easily drive/take the T into the city from Newton or Needham, Cambridge/Somerville (though Cambridge has Mt Auburn hospital which is also v good and I forgot to mention), and the Dorchester/Hyde Park areas for the hospitals that are there. I'm seriously in loooove with Beth Israel for everything and am a loyal follower.
Beyond that, you risk hitting major traffic or T delays that could make going in for a simple OB appt a hassle. My doc said the regular, non-ultrasound, non-big appointments will be 15-20 minutes -- I'm not willing to travel more than what I'd mentioned for that. Unless it's a specialist or something.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!
Similar to pp, my doctor and hospital was in the city, which is about 45 minutes away. With traffic though, the drive could be up to almost 90 minutes. I had lived closer, but moved out to the suburbs during my pregnancy. I worried about going into labor in the middle of rush hour traffic. Luckily for me, my water broke on Easter Sunday morning. There were practically no cars on the road and I was at the hospital in no time. To me, having a good doctor I trusted and a better hospital with a Level III NICU was worth the drive.
I agree with this.
Congratulations!
My doctor was about 35 minutes away and our hospital was 45 minutes away with no traffic. I didn't mind the distance/travel time because I loved the hospital that much more.
One thing you *may* want to consider is the possibility of having to travel the distance every day if by chance a baby has to stay in the NICU. My boys stayed 8 and 14 days and even though it was "only" 45 minutes away, it certainly tooks it toll after a few days.
Have fun coming out with your news when you do!
Congratulations!! This board is the best!
My limit would be about an hour--definitely no more than 90 mins just in case your water breaks and things happen quickly. My water broke in the hospital and I was dilated to a 5 when it broke, so if I had been at home it would have been tricky getting to the hospital if we had a long drive. BUT, you need the best care, so don't settle for a doctor that you don't love.
welcome, congratulations!
OrangeSmoke and i delivered at the same hospital, and had about the same distance to travel. i would CURSE the drive there for all my appts, but if i had to do it all over again i would, no doubt about it.
FYI - my SIL had b/g twins and delivered at Brigham and Women's and had a great experience.
Congratulations on your pregnancy!!!
My OB was about 45 minutes away and the hospital was about an hour. I didn't mind it, because he is one of the best OB's to deliver multiples and was highly recommended by my perinatal doctor. Also, the NICU in the hospital I delivered at was a level 3 and that was an important factor for me,even though my twins didn't need any NICU time. I would travel miles and hours for the best service/doctors.
