Upcoming Open Season: Most childbirth friendly health plan?

For the fellow fed employees on this board: which health insurance plan have you found to be most childbirth & child friendly? I'm generally happy with my current plan but they don't cover breast pumps or doulas, and they only cover certain kinds of midwives. I know most plans don't cover these things but has anyone found one that offerspartial coverage? I was hoping for at least a discount program on pumps & car seats.

  • I believe you can use your FSA to pay for a doula and breast pump. BCBS Basic had very thorough maternity coverage but, like you said, only covers certain types of midwives. I'm curious if there are any plans that cover certified professional (CPM vs. nurse-midwives (CNM).

  • I'm not a fed but I was just going to chime in and say to also make sure you look at coverage for the prenatal care, postnatal care, pediatric care and hospital bill as well as your deductible. My plan covered all of that at 100% so it was good to know that I wouldn't have any medical bills whatsoever. My hospital bill alone was $8K so if I had had to pay a portion of it or if I had a large deductible, it could've been very expensive.

  • Ditto VTkendra - I ended up selecting the HMO plan my employer offers because it had a set amount for procedures (including any kind of labor and delivery) capped at $350.  Plus, I could use my FSA to cover that $350, my breastpump (just needed a doctor's note), and childbirth classes.
