Re: S/O POLL:What activities did you do as a kid?

  • 1. What activities did you do as a kid?

I started ballet when I was 3 and kept with it through high school. Also, swim team from 5 until HS. I did many years of lacrosse, tennis and soccer too. And, my mom was an art teacher so she had me in classes for painting, pottery and other craft-type things. I completely failed at my one year of violin :-)

    2. Was there something you wanted to do but were not able to do?

I wanted to be in gymnastics but I had bad hips so the doctor would not allow it :-(

    3. Was there something you felt like you were 'forced' to do?

All the church related activities (youth group, acolytes, etc...) I really did not enjoy. Ever.

    4. What one activity did you enjoy the most?

I think swimming was my favorite. I had some great coaches of the years and I liked the people on my team. I think it was more social than some of the other activities. (I feel bad now that I think of all the 5am practices my mom and dad took me to plus early Saturday swim meets).

  • 1. What activities did you do as a kid?  I took Saturday morning classes at the art museum for most of elementary school.  Tried gymnastics for a year, but it wasn't for me.  Started flute in 5th grade (lessons, and eventually orchestra and flute choirs) and kept up with that through college.

    2. Was there something you wanted to do but were not able to do?  I wished I was small and bendy enough for gymnastics to have stuck.  Oh, and I desperately wanted to be in ballet in preschool/K because I loved the idea of tutus, but my parents wouldn't let me.

    3. Was there something you felt like you were 'forced' to do? Except for the times when I was annoyed about having to go to art class when Saturday morning cartoons were on, not really.  I didn't have a lot of activities until I started picking them myself.

    4. What one activity did you enjoy the most? Flute is the only one I kept up, but I have really fond memories of the art classes.  I'm not creative enough to be an artist, but I like drawing and painting when I'm given a project (and pottery was so fun, but not realistic to keep up with) and still occasionally smile when I smell that art room smell.

  • 1. What activities did you do as a kid? Gymnastics, T-ball, cheerleader (in kindergarten), swimming, and softball. I also played piano and violin. Then as I got older I did more things.

    2. Was there something you wanted to do but were not able to do?

I loved gymnastics and wanted to be a gymnast but my parents said I was too tall to do it long-term as a career. However, they did let me continue in my classes when I was young.

    3. Was there something you felt like you were 'forced' to do?

I did not like piano and violin. I hated practicing. I am an extrovert and so playing sports was much more fun. Sitting at the piano and forcing myself to practice was boring. I wish I could say that I have some great appreciation for music but I don't. The main thing it taught me is how to stick with something you don't like.

    4. What one activity did you enjoy the most?

I liked gymnastics when I was young. As I got older, I found softball to be really fun as well. I made a lot of good friends and enjoyed the sport.

  • 1. What activities did you do as a kid? Soccer, swimming, piano lessons and choir were the things that I did as a child that I stuck with through high school. I tried ballet, basketball, girl scouts all through elementary school and youth group. I was a soccer referee and lifeguard in high school.

    2. Was there something you wanted to do but were not able to do? I wish I could have stuck with dance. My mom really didn't like the atmosphere or the cost and nudged me towards soccer.

    3. Was there something you felt like you were 'forced' to do? piano lessons. I took them for 12 years and there was never an option there! I loved my teacher but I hated practicing.

    4. What one activity did you enjoy the most? I enjoyed playing soccer more than swimming but I enjoyed the social aspect of swimming.

Side note: I never want my kids to be as busy as I was. In high school I went to 1-2 swim practices a day, plus soccer twice a week, voice lessons once a week, piano lessons once a week, church choir rehearsal once a week and Bible study once a week. I never had time to study and I was exhausted all the time. We never ate dinner until 8:00 at night because of all the places my brother and I were running around to all afternoon. Never ever ever do I want my family to live like this.

  • 1. What activities did you do as a kid?

Swimming was my big one. I think I learned to swim when I was 2 or 3, and I always loved it.

When I was in jr. high and high school, I was really into drama/theatre/acting and did all of the school plays. I continued doing that in college and grad school, and then I finally had to give it up when I started working and didn't have time for rehearsals.

I also dabbled in gymnastics, art, piano, and violin, but none of those stuck.

    2. Was there something you wanted to do but were not able to do?

I wanted to continue playing piano, but my parents didn't want to buy a piano after we moved across the country when I was 10, so I had to give it up.

    3. Was there something you felt like you were 'forced' to do?

I hated playing the violin and was thrilled to quit after 2 years.

    4. What one activity did you enjoy the most?

Swimming when I was younger, and theatre when I was older.

  • 1. What activities did you do as a kid?

I tried EVERYTHING - literally. My parents had me try everything at least once and hoped something stuck. I did tennis, soccer, swimming, field hockey, cheerleading, Little League, softball, gymnastics, etc. They were adamant that I stick with one sport-related thing and something arts/music-related. The ones that "stuck" were figure skating and piano. Later, I quit piano because I thought it was boring and lonely and so I took up the clarinet in junior high and played in the band through HS and joined a marching band in college. So fun. But I was a die-hard figure skater and competed around the world. It was an amazing opportunity. I ended up doing team skating (synchornized skating) when I was older and that was a blast. My best memories and challenges were through ice skating.

    2. Was there something you wanted to do but were not able to do?

Play violin. My school didn't have an orchestra and I wanted to play with an ensemble so I did clarinet instead.

    3. Was there something you felt like you were 'forced' to do?

    Ugh, CCD and church stuff.

    4. What one activity did you enjoy the most?

Figure skating and band were my favorites. I miss both!

  • 1. What activities did you do as a kid? T-ball, 4-H, field hockey, BB gun shooting (can't believe I'm admitting that), drama in high school.

    2. Was there something you wanted to do but were not able to do? Ballet, gymnastics, piano lessons.

    3. Was there something you felt like you were 'forced' to do? T-ball, 4-H, BB gun shooting. My mom was a tomboy, so she made me do all the stuff she wanted to do, and none of the stuff I wanted to do. I'm still bitter!

    4. What one activity did you enjoy the most? Drama. I don't know that I was great at it but I loved it and all the people were so much fun.

  • 1. What activities did you do as a kid?  A little bit of everything!  ballet/dance classes, tennis, piano, art classes, marching band, rowing

    2. Was there something you wanted to do but were not able to do?  I tried gymnastics, but suuuucked.  I wished I was better at piano, too - but, it made me really nervous (like vomit/diarheaa nervous).  I can do just about anything in front of a crowd... except for playing the piano!

    3. Was there something you felt like you were 'forced' to do?  No, I wasn't forced into one activity in particular.  The only requirement I had was that I wasn't allowed to quit anything in the middle of a session.

    4. What one activity did you enjoy the most?  Anything art related  - drawing, painting, pottery, crafts, etc.

    1. What activities did you do as a kid?

Soccer, piano, brownies, and one year of violin

    2. Was there something you wanted to do but were not able to do?

I wanted to play the cello instead of the violin, but was told that I was too small.  I also wanted to play tackle football or ice hockey (both available in our town) but my mom wouldn't let me b/c I was a girl.

    3. Was there something you felt like you were 'forced' to do?

Brownies.  I hated it.  I finally convinced my mom that I wanted to leave in my second year of Juniors.

    4. What one activity did you enjoy the most?

Soccer.  I played it for 12 years and only quit b/c my high school coach burned me out.  I went to one tryout in college and realized that I now hated the sport.

  • oh, I forgot about my miserable experience with Girl Scouts! We had a really strange scout leader.... after a horrible baking experience with natural foods (this was way before they were mainstream- trust be tofu and carob do not make a good cake) and a camping trip that it poured the whole time, I refused to go back.

  • 1.  A little of everything.  Scouting, drama, flute, choir, school newspaper, soccer, basketball, and softball were all my elementary school pursuits.  In high school, sports were dropped for medical reasons and I did Academic Decathalon, environmental and civil rights groups, debate, newspaper, german and french club, model UN and National Honor Society (not all at once - newspaper and language club were the only ones I did all 4 years).

    2. I always wanted to pursue dance, but I am not a graceful individual.  My mom really wanted all of her children while we were in elementary school doing the same things, so it just was not an option when all of your siblings are boys who were way into sports.

    3.  I really didn't like softball, ironically before I had kids, I played it by choice as an adult.

    4. Scouting and drama in elementary school and newspaper and Academic Decathalon in high school.

  • 1. soccer, mostly.  in 5th grade i started the flute & did that (along with bagpipes & the piccolo) almost thru hs.  every summer i did a few weeks of art camp.  i was raised by a single mom w/out a college education & money was too tight for a bunch of activities.  i used my dad's old flute & my grandpa traded doing work at the art center in order for me to take classes there.

    2. not really.  mostly, i liked to read.  i probably would have liked to do more at the art center since i really really enjoyed the time i was there.

    3. nope. b/c things were tight, i only did things i truly enjoyed.  there wasn't really room for gambles on activities.

    4. probably art?  i dunno. it's kind of funny b/c i remember loving drawing (and being really good at when i was little) but then i started doing better academically and my art skills weren't as good as my peers, so i dropped it.  but now i'm back to creative stuff that involves quite a bit of drawing (architectural drawing, but still drawing)

  • 1. What activities did you do as a kid? The big ones were dance and Girl Scouts both of which I started in Kindergarten and continued through high school graduation (and beyond for dance). I also did church youth group and writing/arts classes.

    2. Was there something you wanted to do but were not able to do? I was the most unathletic child on the planet, but I do wish my parents had given me more of an opportunity to play soccer or do swimming or tennis. I think it would have helped me overcome some of my shyness and gain confidence. Since both my parents are also extremely unathletic, I don't think it even occured to them! Then my sister came along who is much more inclined that way, so she did soccer! I also wish I had learned to play a musical instrument somewhere along the line.

    3. Was there something you felt like you were 'forced' to do? There were times when I despised Girl Scouts, but I had a complex about quitting things and so I stuck with it. DH and I were both scouts to the end...I have the Gold Award and he has the Eagle Scout Award! Woot!

    4. What one activity did you enjoy the most? Dance, without a doubt. I still love it.
