Pee accidents at 4.5 y/o?

This has been going on for over two months now, but it's getting worse. My 4.5 y/o boy has been P/T since 2.5 and he never had accidents...from the day he started wearing big boy undies, he never ever ever peed while sleeping...so there was no need for pull up's.

Two months ago, my son started having little "drip" accidents....or he would miss the toilet and pee on his undies...but now he is peeing when he wakes up...like, saturating his bed.

What is an acceptable punishment at this point?

I took him last week to the Pedi to see if there was a UTI, and there was not...and she recommended puting him on a stool softner since he might be backed up, thus his intestines pushing on his bladder...but he is not backed up anymore and he is still peeing!

Ideas?

Thanks!

  • My DD is on Miralax indefinitely due to pee accidents due to constipation. Our pedi said that it takes a while to not associate pooping with pain and in the meantime she'll hold it in. She's been getting the miralax, magic muffins (5g of fiber per) once or twice a day and being taken to the bathroom frequently. I doubt your son is doing it on purpose. I thought DD just didn't care until she broke down crying to me that she didn't want to pee on herself. Until then she had a very cavalier attitude about it, I think it was just a defense mechanism. • Unless you son has some sort of developemental delay, I highly doubt this is something he can control.  Punishments for things that are not within your child's control are not appropiate.  I don't really have any advice other than to look at recent changes in his life and see if there is anything creating anxiety.
  • If he's waking up with a wet bed in the morning I don't think there is much you can do about it. It's not uncommon for 5/6/7 years old to lack nerve bladder control at that age.  It  might be that he's drinking a lot more fluids closer to bedtime or that he's such a deep sleeper he's not waking up to the sensation of having to urinate. Maybe fluid restricting in the early evening/night time and maybe taking him for a bathroom break before you go to sleep.  I'm sure he'll outgrow it in time, till then it seems like a lot of changing sheets for you :(

  • I would stop water before bed.  Maybe wake him before you go to bed to go potty keep the lights low or off and gently take him to potty and right back to bed.  I worked at a sleepover camp and we had to do this 6 year old.
