Food Allergy

2+ moms and older one with allergies

so the NP told us that we should wait until 6m to start solids with James since big brother Jacob has food allergies. What were your experiences with trying foods for the baby(s) after having an older child with issues?

Re: 2+ moms and older one with allergies

  • I'm not 2+ yet, but soon.  I'm due in December and my allergist did tell me that we will be introducing solids a little differently next time around but didn't specify how yet.

Allergies or not, i don't think it's so bad to introduce food at 6m.  Many people do that either way.

  • Our allergist didn't say anything about solids with DD, just that she's at higher risk of allergies because DS has them.  That said, we didn't start solids till 6 months with either kid.  DS has a ton of allergies.  So far DD has none.
  • We just started solids with DS2 last week.  He sees the allergist next week and we're pretty sure he has issues with dairy and probably eggs (due to eczema).  I had every intention of waiting until after we saw the allergist at least to start solids- but the kid just seemed super hungry and I can't pump enough at work.

We started with sweet potatoes.  Those are at the very bottom of the allergy list.  I made them myself so I would know exactly what's in it and not have any cross contaimination issues.  He won't get any new foods until after his testing next week.

Once we have the test results- we'll proceed very slowly with soids.  I'm going to make as much as I can myself and we'll certainly follow the 4 day wait rule between new foods.  Honestly- it will probably be like a week between each food because we'll intro them on Saturday mornings so that he doesn't react to something at night/with the sitter.

I was so excited to start solid food with my first DS and I'm really just anxious about it this time :(

  • We waited until 11 months with #2.  #2 just turned 7 months and we're going to wait a little longer.

#2 and #3 have no allergies that we know of.  Delaying solids worked well with #2 and he transitioned just fine.  We just did one or two new foods a week and watched closely for reactions.
