Food Allergy

Going to allergist - newly diagnosed

Hi there!

We're newly diagnosed with allergies. Looks like milk, eggs, casine, wheat and peanut butter. Soy is safe. This is based on bloodwork ordered by LO's primary doctor. We knew milk, but the others are a bit of a surprise.

Just wondering what to expect at the first allergist appointment.

 Thanks!

  • sorry to hear about his allergies!

Since you already had blood work done, the allergist might want to test your LO for other things.  Possibly by a skin test, but if your pedi did include all the possible allergens the allergist would have then i'm assuming he would skip the skin test.

Do you know what he was tested for exactly? top 8?

The allergist may just want to speak to you and explain the levels to you. Which ones are serious and what to avoid.

    good luck!

  • If your LO has been exposed to some of the foods that tested positive (like wheat) and hasn't reacted- I'd ask about a food challenge in case you got a false positive.

  • At DS's first appointment the doctor went over all the reactions he'd had-what happened, when, what exactly he ate.  We did a skin test.  Then we went over the reactions and what they meant based on those results.  We talked about allergy meds, how to use the EpiPen, and chances DS would outgrow allergies.  The doctor also gave us a bunch of papers with info about calcium content (DS is allergic to dairy), as well as things like iron.  He gave us some website recommendations too for food allergies.
