Elliptical In Your House?

Winter is coming! I've been walking like mad, but always stop in the winter because of the cold.

I had a bicycle in my house and never used it. It given to me by my mother, though, and I've never been a fan of recumbant bicycles.

Now I'm thinking about buying an elliptical. They are what I used 85% of the time when I have a gym membership.

Should I spend $150-$200 on an elliptical for my house? Or just re-up my gym membership for the winter?

  • I had mine in the bedroom then in our study. We bought it  about 3 weeks before I found out I was pregnant and my OB didn't want me doing anything. I am actually selling it on CL right now. If you want some info on it you can email me at jenniferlcook@gmail.com

  • Our Christmas gift to each other almost three years ago was a treadmill.  We bought it because we knew that once DD#1 arrived, we'd have to get workouts in whenever we could.  It's been one of the best purchases we've made, and we've gotten tons of use out of it.  It helped us maintain some sort of exercise routine--fitting in walks/runs whenever we could; and, we can't use the bad weather excuse either.  It's really been a lifesaver with the extreme heat we had this summer.  I could still workout even when it was a 1000 degrees outside.  Definitely worth it in my opinion!

ETA:  We also knew that making time for the gym would be tough once we had a baby (and I'm thinking even harder now that we'll have two kiddos).  Plus, buying a treadmill has been much cheaper than paying for a gym membership.  A membership was something we knew we really couldn't afford long term, and would be the first thing to go if/when we needed to make cuts.

  • I had one before DH and I got married. It was a very expensive clothes hanger. I found that for me, if it's sitting around the house and I can do it "whenever" I'll keep putting it off until it's too late and don't end up doing it at all. Same goes for exercise videos.

  • We bought a nice one while I was pregnant (it was $1000 +) and DH used it every day for a while. It was never a smooth as the ones in the gym and was pretty loud. When DD got older, the study-turned-gym turned into the playroom and we moved the elliptical to the garage...and that was that.

I put it on CL to sell (for $350) last year and got several emails right away. While one person was on the way to come get it, we decided to plug it in a dust it off..it fell apart! The screen fried, then a plastic piece fell off. I was pissed because it wasn't cheap. It's still sitting in our garage taking up space.
  • I did some pretty extensive research on buying an elliptical last year and it seemed like the reviews of home models were VERY scattered. The ones under $1K rarely get good ratings at all. There are some horror stories about parts breaking and warranty disasters. It was bad enough that we decided that it would not be worth the space and I didn't get one. Treadmills seem to fare much better in homes.

  • We bought a Precor (same line at the gym we were members of) and it is awesome. Super quiet, super smooth and super sturdy!

They have a delivery team that brings it in and installs it and check it out for you (there is a fee) and when we moved, they come out and packed it up for shipping. We called the local precor store here and someone came out and assembled it and tested it out here for us too.

Super easy to deal with AND if you get an RX from your doctor for one, you don't have sales tax!

  • I bought one about 7 years ago when I didn't have a gym membership. I used it all the time. Now, not so much. But since ours folds up, it doesn't take up a lot of space, so we keep it. Also, it doesn't need electricity or battery to work (only to keep track of time.) if you remind me, I can look up the model when I'm home.
  • We bought a precor after DD #2 - had an rx so tax free.. I use it sporadically but DH uses it at least 3-4 times a week. I wish it wasnt in our bedroom because I want to use it early in the morning but DH is still sleeping. If you are going to get one spend the money on a good one because the less expensive ones are crap.
