Babies: 3 - 6 Months

When did your baby start STTN?

Hi all! I'm not quite ready for this board yet as my baby is only 11 weeks, but I thought the authority on sleeping through the night (STTN) would be over here.  When did your little one start to do this? Any tricks?

TIA,

McMommy

Re: When did your baby start STTN?

  • We are really lucky - DD started STTN at about 11/12 weeks. She sleeps about 8 hours most nights, with the occassional wake-up in the middle of the night for a feeding.

  • It TOTALLY depends on your definition of STTN. On DD's 3 month birthday she stopped eating in the middle of the night and would only wake up for her binky and go right back to sleep. At a little over 4 months I did sleep training and she started truly sleeping through the night from 7 pm-anywhere between 5-6:15 am. The last two days she has discovered how fun it is to roll around at night though and she's been waking up around 4 am to practice.
  • imagemullenem:

My girl started STTN 6 or so hours at about 6 weeks.  By 10-11 weeks, she was STTN 10-11 hours.  I don't know that there's really a trick persay, but she's a good sleeper and from the beginning, I tried feeding her very frequently (every 2 hours) during the day so she banks all those calories and could go longer at night between feedings.  The LC I saw said that doing this helps with their day/night confusion by showing them "day is when I eat, night is when I sleep."   She also would cluster-feed for an hour or more in the evening up until 8 weeks or so which helped her have a longer stretch.

I of course had no idea if this is what caused our good night sleeper, or if she's just naturally a good night sleeper and I have no idea how you can apply this when they are a bit older if you didn't start it from the beginning.  But, I do know that I'll be feeding my next baby every two hours (or three hours once or twice a day if they're sleeping) all day long (even if I have to wake them up) and hope that it works!

The other thing that I think helps is having a good bedtime routine (we feed in the living room, lights and tv on, then go to her room where the light is dim and change her into jammies, rock and read a story, and then it's off to bed with lots of goodnights and kisses.)  And putting them in bed at a reasonable time.  My girl goes down between 8 and 8:30 at the latest.  You would think that putting them to bed a little later, like when you go to bed at 10 or so, would be better but they can actually sleep longer if you put them in bed a bit earlier.

I used to cluster DD at night too, but at this age that doesn't work anymore. She got off of her typical bottle routine yesterday because she woke up so early and then slept through 2 feeding times, so her last two bottles of the day were only 1.5 hours apart and she barely ate out of her second bottle. I feel like a month ago even if her last two feedings of the day were close together she would still eat both bottles.

  • I'll let you know...

  • DD has STTN a handful of times(5hours) Right now it is back to every 45 mins-2 hours, for the last 2 weeks.
  • Again, we got lucky.  DD started STTN at almost 3 months, but that is after weeks of not sleeping at all.  She now sleeps every night between 8 - 9 and wakes up at 5.  I started a bed time routine at 2 months with her.  A favorite blanket, books, and a bottle since I was nursing still at 2 months.  She still has some wakeful moments at 2 AM but they are very few and far between.

  • She started sleeping 6 hour stretches at 6 weeks, then she started sleeping 7-9 hour stretches at 8 or 9 weeks. She slept last night for 9.5.

I am a SAHM so I keep her up with me until 10:30. I tried putting her to bed earlier, but she just woke up at 4am.

We feed her every 2 hours (bf) and like a PP said, we keep all the lights on while feeding to signal that its "awake" time. At night time, we do our last feeding in bed with the lights off to signal bedtime. Then we change her diaper and put her down still slightly awake. We got really lucky b/c she just falls asleep on her own in her RnP.

Idk if this matters, but we also let her nap whenever she wants during the day (stopping naps at 7:30/8 until bedtime). We also make noise while shes napping during the day (nothing excessive, but we keep the lights and tv on). She sleeps through all noise now, including Dhs daily alarm and even a tornado siren! Ha! This helps a lot b/c she still sleeps in our room.

All babies are different though and although there are tricks to help LO sleep longer, your baby is going to do what its body desires. I know babies who didn't STTN for a year! I know that's not what you want to hear, but just trying to help you stay realistic.

  • DS started doing a decent number of 6-8 hour stretches around 2-3 months and started doing 10-11.5 hour stretches every night around 3-4 months. He is a night-time cluster feeder.

Unfortunately, he's been having weird growth spurts off and on since 4 mos., so some nights we get 11 hours from him and other nights he wakes 1-3 times to eat. Last night he woke up once, at 4am. The night before it was three times, at 9pm, 11pm, and 2am. It's sort of random.

  • I define STTN as all night, and DS did this the first time on his 4 month birthday.  He did it straight for weeks, and just last week has started waking again.  I think its because he's able to move around his crib so much.

  • mine pretty much slept # hours = # weeks old, so 6 hours at 6 weeks old, 8 hours at 8 weeks old, etc.  She maxed out at 11.5 and that's what we're still at.  She goes to sleep at 7:30p and wakes at 7a.

i fully agree with putting them to bed earlier to get more sleep.  It's definitely worth a shot for a few days, anyway.  I know it doesn't make much sense to us (because we can read a clock), but babies just sleep better/longer when they go to bed before they're over tired.

we also did the feeding every 2-3 hours all during the day to get her calories up so she wouldn't need to eat at night.

  • My DS has been STTN for about 3-4 weeks now.  Some nights he will wake for a bottle @ around 3-4am then go right back t sleep.  But that isnt very often.

  • we are very very lucky and she started at 8 weeks.  She occasionally wakes up for the pacifier and then goes back to sleep.
