reflux mamas, come in please

Have you started solids with your LO?  Have you noticed an improvement in their reflux symptoms?

This might be a dumb question, but is it the cereal specifically that is supposed to help, or is it just started solids in general?  We started Liam on rice cereal about a week ago, and introduced peas over the weekend.  He LOVES eating the food and it does seem to be helping with the reflux a bit (I noticed that he's not getting upset when spitting up, and the spit up volume seems to be decreasing a bit), so I think it is helping.  but, the downside is, the cereal seems to be making him super gassy!  ugh!  So now he's uncomfortable from that at times.  I'm wondering if switching to oatmeal will help make him less gassy.

He's still on 2ml of Zantac 2 times/day...I'm really hoping to be able to wean him off of it soon, the doctor seemed hopeful that he would be off the meds by 6 months or so (he'll be 5 months next week)

  • We haven't started any cereal-- the pedi said we could if her nighttime screaming didn't improve with the Zantac, but it did... well, when we give her all the doses.

We finally told them that since daycare won't give her any meds, 3 doses a day wasn't working- she's now on 1ml 2x a day.

I also heard they should outgrow it by 6 months.... crossing fingers!!

  • At our 4 month the dr said any type of solids should help because it is supposed to "weigh the stomach down".

We're actually just now starting zantac to see if that is what has been bothering C.  She has been a super fussy baby who doesn't sleep her entire life but the last few weeks to month she has been screaming like she's in pain so we're going to try it.

  • We won't be starting on solids until 6 months but my LO is on Zantac twice a day, 1.5 ML - she was never fussy from the reflux but does spit up a bunch (and last night went to the ER because she was spitting up blood, therefore being diagnosed with reflux) - good luck with the gas but glad your LO likes the food!

  • Are you giving him cereal in the bottle or straight? We mix 1tsp per 2oz of milk. The idea is that the thickened milk will stay down easier. He was getting 1tsp per bottle, but the pedi increased the amount last week. He also increased his Zantac to 1ml 3x a day. That hasnt worked so we started Prevacid today. The cereal in the bottle has helped more than anything at this point....

    Edit:

We use Oatmeal as the Rice made him super gassy. They advise rice first as Oatmeal has a higher allergy issue.

  • No solids for us yet. Pedi wants us to wait until 6 months and she didn't mention anything about whether it would help with his reflux. I've heard it does though since the food is thicker so it doesn't come back up as easily. Ev is back on the zantac (after trying out prevacid for a few weeks which didn't work at all), taking 1.7 ml twice a day, and when he keeps it down it does seem to help at least his discomfort.

  • I have been putting 1.5 tbsp of rice cereal in evan's last bottle of the night since he was about 2 months (doc said it was ok) because the sleeping made me nervous with his reflux. he never spit up at night. we started solids at 16 weeks but they also switched him from zantac to prilosec and we have seen a major improvement. i can't say if its from the prilosec or the food but its probably a combo of both. talk to your doc about maybe switching to prilosec.

  • thanks for the feedback ladies!  We're doing cereal at dinner time right now (spoon fed).  I talked to the doctor at his 4 month appt about possibly switching meds; he seemed hesitant to do so right now since he did feel that starting cereal would help him.  So instead, he increased the dose to 2.0 (he had been on 1.6), and said that between the increased dose & the cereal, he expected to see an improvement, but to call back into the office if that wasn't the case.

I'll give the oatmeal a shot, hopefully that won't make him as gassy.

  • No solids for us also. Our  Pedi recommends waiting saying that having a sensitive tummy its better to wait. If Alexis starts acting hungry after feedings as in breast milk is not enough to satisfy her we can go ahead and start not to wait till her 6month appointment.
