3rd Trimester

Vomited at 3 hour glucose test - now what?

I went to a lab yesterday to complete my 3 hour glucose test (I failed the 1 hour test for gestational diabetes).  I drank the 100 grams of sugar and waited patiently with my husband by my side.  At the one hour mark, my blood was drawn and I told the lab technician that I was feeling nauseous.  Less than 10 minutes later, out came all of the sickeningly sweet sugar drink into the trash can.

I hate super sugary things.  I don't even like ice cream (I know, I know). Obviously I will do anything for my baby, so I will try this test again if need be, but I honestly do not think I could ever keep down that much sugar.  It's just not how I'm wired and I think I will vomit every time.

I am going to my doctor this morning for a routine visit and to try and find an alternative means of determining whether I have gestational diabetes.

Will let you know what she says.

  • Just wanted to say sorry, and good luck!  Hope there is another option for you or a way to keep it down!  I had to take the 3 hour too and while it wasn't too bad, I can see how hard it could be on an empty stomach for those still struggling with morning sickness, or just more sensitive to that amount of sugar, it is a ton at once!  My DH told me after this pregnancy, he's sure I have an iron stomach, nothing ever phased me that bad Hmm

  • I don't think you have to take it again as long as she drew the blood before you got sick. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, though

For the 3 hour, they usually draw blood 4 times, once before you have the drink, and then once an hour for 3 hours after you have the drink.  So if she vomited before all the blood draws were done, they didn't get what they needed.  The point of the 3 hour is to see how your body processes the specific amount of sugar at certain intervals.

This!  I have been in the lab when another woman was retaking her 3 hour because she vomited right before the 3rd hour.

  • That stinks, sorry!

I am pretty sure you have to take it again or just assume you have gestational diabetes.

If it was me I would just take it again...

You'll probably have to retake it. I was seconds away from vomiting. I just sat there and held it in. It was horrible.

I did the same thing.  Held it in.  It was horrible!

  • They'll probably have you try again, and if it still doesn't work, they might give you a glucometer and have you monitor your blood sugar for a few weeks in the morning and after meals to see where you stand.

  • Yes, this is what I have to do (I'm the OP).  I have an appointment with Maternal Fetal Medicine and they are going to set me up with a dietician and a glucometer and monitor me for a week.  The doctor said that it is unlikely that I would be able to keep down the sugar drink, so this is the next best thing.  I am getting worried and all of this is causing me some undue anxiety.  I appreciate all the well wishes!
  • I almost vomited too at my 3 hour.  I told the lady drawing my blood and she kept saying "Don't throw up.  You can't throw up."  I didn't but it was really hard not to.  It made it so much worse!
