It's starting to cool off here and winters can be nasty (wind and cold temps). Do we need to get DS a winter coat? He can't necessarily wear it in the car seat can he?
We have an infant seat and a hand-me-down cover for it, but I have a feeling he will outgrow the seat before its cold enough for the cover. We have a convertible seat already and I wasn't sure what we can put him in as far as clothes go and still be able to buckle him in.
Re: Does DS need a winter coat?
No thick/puffy coats or snowsuits in car seats - it makes it so the straps aren't tight enough and baby can fly out in a crash. With a convertible seat, you have to take off the coat too and if you want you can put it on backward over top afterward. Otherwise, you just use blankets over the seat.
If you'll spend time outside other than running to and from the car, then you need a proper winter coat or snowsuit. We haven't got that far yet - we have a couple snowsuits people gave us, but they're from Old Navy and I don't think they're actually very warm.
I won't be buying anything aftermarket with holes for the straps - none of that stuff is actually approved by anyone as safe.

i would like to see that. i had no idea it was "unsafe" to put LO in a carseat with a heavy coat. not to sound snarky, but i really don't see how that would make the baby easier to get thrown out of the carseat.?
Found it!

I don't go as far as to take the coat off, but like I said before I don't zip the coat as shown here.

If the straps are too loose it is scary how a baby/kid's body can just slip out when the coat is compressed when in an accident.
It is not as safe as I could be, but I have tested the straps with the coat off and they are tight enough.
I was just watching stuff on youtube, and it is terrifying how they can just slip out in a crash.
I think I'm going to make a car seat poncho from one of the eight zillion baby blankets we got - I'll just cut a head hole in a polar fleece one. When it gets really cold, we'll probably have to do the jacket with the straps mostly underneath trip. Weather here gets pretty extreme.
