Maternity Leave Question

How much do you get, and is it paid?

Also, are you full time or part time?

I am part time, and my boss informed me today that I'm not going to get any paid leave, so I'm kinda freaking out.  Of course, I'm still expected to the work so that everyone can still function while I'm gone...ugh...

Re: Maternity Leave Question

  • With DS I was a "part time" employee but ended up working full time hours 90% of the time. I was eligible to take up to 12 weeks off as personal leave but it was unpaid. I ended up back at work at 5wks pp. I worked for 5 months and then quit to SAH.

  • I'm a SAHM now, but with my first, I worked part-time and for my leave, I used all my accumulated sick days (I'm a teacher, so I get a crazy amount of sick days every year). So technically, it was paid, but had I not had those days, I would not have been paid. Unfortunately, any sick days I took after my leave were unpaid.

  • Most people at my work would get 12 weeks paid at 60% of full time pay, but I fall in unusual classification of an employee and I'll have 12 weeks paid at 100%. My job is full time.
  • I am a full time and I will for sure be taking 8 weeks off, paid.  I can take up to 12 weeks off, but the last 4 are either unpaid or I can use vacation/sick leave for them.  I work from home and we are thinking about either having my H go part time and staying home or getting a nanny. So even after the 8 weeks, I will get to be at home a lot during the day, spending time with my baby.

What do you do and is your company hiring?!

I get 12 weeks paid at 60%. I can choose to take as many or as few PTO hours as I have accumulated, so it's time to start stockpiling the hours!

  • I work for the Canadian Government. The good things are really good and the bad things are really bad. So I am so excited to have a year away from that place

  • My company offers full timers 12 weekly fully paid which is generous. Does your Company provide unpaid leave with the option to supplement personal time (vaaction, sick, personal)? Not sure the size of your Compant but can you talk with someone in HR who administers your leaves of absences? GL to you.

  • I got 6 weeks paid for vaginal delivery and 8 weeks paid for c section.  I might use some of my vacation time to extend it some though!  I also signed up for AFLAC before we started TTC to compensate for my part time job (and maybe a little extra).

I'm super jealous of a whole year off!

Me too (I heart Canada Yes) but it'll be 55% of my wage. Government workers have sweet benefits, lucky you!

  • I was looking into that today and I don't get any maternity leave. :(  My state's law says that you have to be a full-time employee, have worked at the company for a year and have at least 50 employees available in a 75 mile radius in order for them to HAVE to give you maternity leave. Unfortunately, I fit the requirements but I work for a small company and they don't have enough employees for it to be mandatory.
  • I'm a contractor so I can take quite a bit of time off, but it will be unpaid.  Not sure if I'll be going back or not yet.

  • I believe I get 10 weeks paid for maternity, and I can use 2 weeks of vacation to bump it up to a full 12 weeks.  DH and I have been wanting to move out West for over a year so we are thinking that once my maternity is over we should move then since we would not be able to afford full-time care where we currently live.

  • I get nothing for my leave.  I'm probably going to go back but hopefully I'll find another job before LO comes.  It would be unpaid either way so changing jobs wouldn't be a problem.  Plus I want to work normal hours during the winter/spring(I work in tax).
  • I get 7 weeks paid at 100%, and weeks 8-13 paid at 80%. I can also use my 3 weeks vacation, so I'll be taking around 16 weeks with most of my salary intact.

  • My company has a pretty awesome maternity leave policy - 16 weeks fully paid.  That said though I'm being laid off in March so unless I get extended, I won't be able to take advantage of that awesome policy this time around. :(  For the last pregnancy though, it was amazing.  On top of that I was on STD for 3 months (fully paid) before the 16 weeks.

Is there any way for you to take early maternity before you get laid off? Because that would be a nice way to thank them for for it. :)

  • If you have short term disability you should get paid around 60% of your salary. A lot of employers don't cover maternity leave, but do offer short term disability.

  • Nada is paid.  But I signed up for STD through AFLAC so I'll have 6 weeks (or possibly 8) at about what my pay is now, and then I'll just 6 weeks of PTO to cover the full 12 weeks.  I'm taking that 12 weeks man!
