Cough-when to call?

DD (and I) have both had coughs for a good 2wks now-maybe longer. Hers sounds like a phlegmy cough. She has had a runny nose (clear) on and off during that time. She might have had a slight fever one night over a week ago, but I didnt take her temp-it was bedtime and she just felt warm to me. I'm just wondering when a cough is just a cough (allergy related?) or when to call for it. I guess I keep waiting for other symptoms, but nothing has really reared its head

Re: Cough-when to call?

  • I'd probably wait a bit longer.  A normal cold can last for 10 days+ with lingering cough for significantly longer than that.  If she gets a fever, is irritable, problems sleeping, or anything else then I would call.

  • Coughs can hang around long after the rest of the cold seems to be gone. I had to take Ian in when the cough from his cold went from phlegmy to kind of barky and he developed a slight fever again. Dr. said that it appeared to be the beginning of a bronchial infection, so I'm glad I took him in when I did.
  • i wouldnt wait any longer..... i've heard whopping cough is in the area. at the worst you waste a copay
  • Whooping cough is pretty distinct sounding.

If she has no other symptoms besides a clear runny nose, I would think it is allergies/end of a cold.  I would wait and see if other symptoms come up or if there is any change at all to take her in.
