too much tylenol?

hmmm maybe this is flame worthy...

So I'm sure you're all getting sick of my belly aching about no sleep, haha. Anyways- this whole mess started with teething so the last 2 nights I've given the twins tylenol before bed- B has slept 7:30-5:30 both nights and Nat went from waking up 3x to only waking up once. I feel a world of difference and the babies seems much less grumpy in the morning.

So, is it wrong to give them tylenol at bedtime on a regular basis? They don't have fevers and are not "actively teething"- Nat is always drooley and B has been working on his 1st tooth for months.  I don't want to do any damage...

Re: too much tylenol?

  • I don't think it's wrong.  If it seems to help, there's no harm in giving it in the correct dosage.  I did that last week with Stella.  She had a cold, runny nose, little cough, no fever and was waking up a lot, just whining.  We decided to try and give her Ibuprofin before bed and she slept great.

  • I don't know if I'd give it on a regular basis, but it really seems as though they're needing it, so I don't see it as a bad thing. Ian was always much worse at night with teething, so on those nights when he was constantly up, I'd give him the Tylenol.
  • I would check with jnk on how often might be too often.  We used to think Ty was in some sort of pain (turns out it was sensory processing dysfunction) and consided giving him Tylenol on a regular basis.  I researched it and the only issue may be from liver damage, but that seems to be more from too high a dose rather than from frequency.

On the lines of sleep, my kids are the world's worst sleepers.  They have both been waking several times a night for the last two weeks, Anna more than Ty.  Anna has been just wide awake for hours on end.  Finally, they both crashed last night and slept all night!  Ty woke up once looking for his bear but quickly fell back asleep.  I have noticed changed in weather effect their sleep, and mine.  I am a poor sleeper myself, always have been.  Now that they slept last night, it has been my experience that as long as they stay on schedule, they will continue to sleep for at least the next couple days.  At least until something random, half the time I don't know what, throws them off again.  At least A anyway, she is my worst sleeper now.

  • i'm pretty sure we gave ethan tylenol for almost a month staright when he was teething.   I would check with a pharmacist to make sure it is ok.  I think there is a possibility of liver damage but I don't know how long /often you have to give it for that to occur.
  • We definitely have given Eve tylenol/motrin for weeks straight when we think she is teething or just off.

  • They were term babies, they are over 3 months, and it is 1 dose a night.  So no, it won't hurt them and they should be fine.

I wouldn't personally do it, but I am much more conservative on medications.  No medication is without all risk.  And like others mentioned, it is going thru their liver.  You aren't worried about acute overdose, but it isn't something that you do chronically without needing to.  One thing I would prefer, is to do it for a few nights, then I would take a night off to see if maybe they are ok to go without.  If the change in sleep is still drastic, repeat.  I would just keep doing some nights without so that once they are over the teething, you catch that and don't just continue the tylenol.

Hope you all get some sleep!
