Baby Showers

Registering for clothes?

Hi ladies,

I'm making my registry now for my shower that is about a month away. I wonder if there's even a point of registering for clothes - people LOVE to buy baby clothes, and I'll probably get a ton anyway. Or am I shooting myself in the foot by not asking for them? What did you do on your registry?

Thanks,

Birdie

Re: Registering for clothes?

  • We have a ton of clothes already, so we just registered for a few things.  You are right people love to buy clothes, so its probably pointless to register for specific items because they will just pick out what they want anyway, lol.  But we did register for some generic items we knew we still needed and would use (side snap newborn tshirts, plain onesies, etc.), and also a few pairs of pants in larger sizes that we know we will need eventually, in the hope that people would pick up on at least the type of clothing items we still needed.

I don't think there is any harm in registering for clothes, just don't be disappointed if you don't get any of them.  Wink

  • I'd consider registering for some basics like packs of onesies, but beyond that it's pretty difficult to buy clothes from a registry (usually the registry print-out comes up with a long barcode number and if you're lucky, an abbreviated description).  You'll likely get a ton of outfits regardless of whether you like them or not, so don't bother registering for them.

  • We were team green, so we didn't get a lot of clothes.  We did register for clothes so we could use our completion coupon on them.
  • Sure. If you see an outfit you really like I would go for it. And even if you dont get it, most registries will give you a discount on items you didn't get so you will be able to get it cheaper :)
  • We are not registering for any clothes other than some hats and sleep sacks/wearable blankets.  The past 2-3 showers I went to people went crazy buying baby clothes!  And those mothers didn't register for clothes either.  I have a feeling we will get plenty...plus we still have Christmas before the baby is born so I am sure there will be clothes coming under the tree too.

  • Personally, I would not register for clothes for 2 reasons.  #1 People will buy them for you whether you register or not and #2 It is very hard to find them (what you are registered for) in the store because they don't have the size, color, pattern, etc. you want or they are seasonal or they don't carry them anymore for whatever reason.  There are a couple exceptions...I would register for sleep sacs and onesies and bibs (all in different sizes).  Never seemed like I ever had enough of those.   lol
  • IMHO, it's a total waste to register for clothing.  The other reasons cited in this thread are good, but here's my main reason.  If someone is looking on your registry, then I would rather them buy something that is a necessity, even if it's a bottle brush, or some wash cloths, rather than spend their money on clothing.  In the end, if you have some onesies and a warm blanket, baby will be fine.  But diapers are expensive!  I'd rather someone get me a pack of those!  Now, this baby girl I'm carrying has more clothing than she could ever hope to wear.  On my Target registry I registered for one back of gowns, because I didn't have many of those.  And that was the only clothing item I registered for...and I got it.  And I had kind of talked it up to everyone about how grandma had gone overboard buying clothes...it wasn't a lie, and I don't know if it worked, but besides my niece who bought the gowns, only one other person bought ANY clothing...and it was 3 outfits from Carter's that were completely NMS.  Took them back to Kohl's and got $40 in credit, and bought things that I actually needed.

I know clothes are cute and they have the "wow" factor, especially at a shower, but I just wouldn't do it.

  • I registered for a some basic things: sleepers, onesies, socks, etc. Most people like to buy clothes so I wanted to give them an idea of what we like & still need.

  • We registered for 1 onesie at DH's request (it was a Pink Floyd onesie).  Other than that I didn't register for any clothes.  Between my mom, MIL and grandma I know we are already getting a ton and I figured I would get even more from other people as well.

  • Lots of variables to this.  If you already know the gender and have announced that (especially if it's a girl), I would not bother.  Most people love to shop for clothes.

We didn't know the gender, so at our shower, we received very few articles of clothing (I'm talking 5 outfits max).  Of those, 90% were from our registry.  Many guests get frustrated trying to pick out gender neutral attire and (I think) appreciated the ease of just getting it off the registry.

I also liked registering for clothing because we are trying to stick with all natural fibers and organic if possible.  Just having a few items like that on a registry helps to indicate your preferences for those who want to know.

I had two registries.  An online-only (which did have clothing and easy shopping) and Target (no clothing).

  • Don't bother- you will get soooo many!
  • For DS I registered for clothes and got a lot of clothes at my showers...not one item of clothes that I registered for.  So I wouldn't even bother.  You end up with cute stuff anyway, even if it isn't quite your style.

  • I just did my registry a few wks back and I only added a few basics as far as clothing such as jamies and onesies. But I refrained from adding actually clothing simply b/c pp will go out and buy this stuff anyway. Also, baby clothes tend to sell out fast and by the time someone even considers buying an outfit listed on a registry, it's usually not in stock. But if you come across a particular outfit that's a "must have", then by all means add it and hopefully someone will get it for you!
