C-sections

Choosing to Labor Before C?

So DH and I have been talking about TTC in the next year or so.  I had a HORRIBLE vaginal delivery and will likely be facing a C this time.  I'm not against having a C but I am against a scheduled C.  I would much prefer to labor first.  I know that's probably weird but I really don't like the idea of going in and taking out a baby that wasn't ready to come out.  Are there doctors out there who would allow this?

Re: Choosing to Labor Before C?

  • That depends on why you are thinking you'll have to have a c/s. Most of the time, if it's a physical issue, your doc will want to control the situation as much as possible and schedule your c/s. That being said, you have a right to question their date. If you want to schedule it for 40w or whatever, tell your doc that. The only reason they'd question/fight that is if you should NOT go into labor.

  • There are more risks to mom this way.  Most OBs are ok with it if it happens on it's own, but don't like to let you go past 39w for this reason.

  • Have you considered midwifery? Maybe you can find a MW who practices with an OB group who has dealt with women who've had traumatic births before. I'm sure you could talk to someone about if the same situation happens (or starts to happen), a c-section can be decided on then.

And while there is more of a risk of complications with c-sections following labor, I don't think it's insanely high if it's your first c-section. hth!

  • This is something I'm considering as well for the same reasons. I broke my pelvis in an accident and our DS couldn't fit through because of the way the bones had set, so I'm fine until I'm at the point of having to push.

My first labour came on fast and hard though (started with contractions every 3 minutes and within an hour they were every 1 minute for 45 seconds and it stayed that way the entire time). It was very difficult to get my epi -- it took three tries because my contractions were so close together and moving brought on more contractions. I just don't want another scary, panicked c-section.

    I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living my baby you'll be.
