I need to know how to make dish towel toppers (like my Granny used to make).

Yes, they are fairly hideous, but my dad wants some because Granny's old ones that he uses are rather threadbare now. I could easily crochet the topper part, but how do you start it on the towel? Do you poke holes for the yarn & hook to go through?
I've tried looking around on Ravelry.com and I'm not really getting anywhere with it.

Maybe, I didn't even think of that. I could also just get one from my dad this weekend and break it down or something.
I saw a tutorial the other day for a pillow case with a crocheted trim and it looks like they put holes in the cotton material similar to this: https://yougogirl.typepad.com/you_go_girl/2010/03/a-firm-foundation.html. That's probably how I would do it for the towel too.
