Meat for babies! Help!

We have been given the ok to give DD meats! YEA!

How do I do this best? Do I puree it in a food processor, or do you just mash and serve your own meats to them to try like finger foods? I have read a few different sites about this, but I am confused. Looking for suggestions and advice. TIA!

  • We pureed some chicken. I boiled it for about two hours, then pureed it.  She's not too impressed with it.  Maybe I will try a little later with little pieces.

  • I've only done storebought meat baby food for C. His fave is a chicken/apple compote.. I can't remember who makes it. Pretty sure it's either Earth's Best or Beech Nut.

You boiled it for two HOURS?  I can't say I'd like that much either haha  Are you Irish?  We love to boil our stuff :)  Try adding fruit to chicken/turkey.  The flavors of meat can be a big change so if you pair it with a fruit or veggie they've already had, the transition might be easier.

  • If we are talking chicken, try a leg or thigh first (with the skin on) , then bake covered. Once its cooled, take the skin off and fork shred it real fine. There are some recommendations out there that will tell you that the dark meat is better at this age for the added calories. I've given DS both like and dark meat, but DH prefers dark meat, so we have more of it in the house. :)

  • I can't stomach the thought of pureed meat so I bought some jarred (beech nut i think?) chicken with sweet potatoes. (somehow the potato mix made it not so much like dog food)  P loves his sweet pots, so I figured it was a good way to introduce it. He LOVED it, so we're going to just cut up some chicken in tiny bits next time we have it. He's done well with small chunks of other things, so he should be ok.

The dark meat also has more iron! Depending on your LO's age, you might be able to just give them a drumstick to gnaw on.

  • I just baked the chicken and then put it into the blender until it was powdery.  Then i added water and pureed it until it was the right consistency.

  • We never did purees. We moved straight to giving him bits of whatever we eat. I also made a turkey meatloaf that I keep frozen in tiny portions that I pull out and crumple whenever we are eating something that isn't appropriate to give him.

  • I have roated chicken and turkey, let it cool, then pureed it, and added it to sweet potatoes for Max.  He isn't too fond of meat on it's own, but loves it mixed in with his veggies.

  • I boiled chicken breasts as well ( but only for about 35 minutes until it was cooked through!), and then put in in the food processor to make tiny bits.

     I made chicken/apples/pasta, chicken/sweet potatoe/apple and chicken/ butternut/acorn squash and he LOVES them.

  • We do BLW, so no pureed meat for us <shudder>. LO has had pulled pork and pulled chicken that he picks up claw or pincher-style. We've also given him tender beef roast--I cut a piece in a fry shape and he holds one end and sucks/gnaws on the other.
