HUGE lump on DS's neck...swollen lymphnode?

Yesterday I was standing behind DS and noticed the right side of his neck looked swollen. Once I actually felt it, I felt a huge lump:no bruising, no redness or marks. We took him to the pedi today, just to be sure, and she said it was a swollen lymphnode, and prescribed antibiotics....

However, everything I googled online said the swollen lymphnodes are the result of bacterial/viral infections, strep throat, chicken pox, etc. DS has not had any of these, has no fever, etc..... Has anyone else's child had this? I am wondering what else may have caused this/if this is the correct diagnosis???

Re: HUGE lump on DS's neck...swollen lymphnode?

  • My DD had a swollen lymphnode when she was 18 months.  It was maybe an inch or so.  Our pedi sent us to an ENT Dr.  They did a bunch of tests (sorry I don't remember all of them right now).  But one test was a TB test. She ended up having atypical micobacterium, also known as atypical tuberculosis.  The ENT said she most likely got it from playing in dirt.  It was a big fluke.  She had to have surgery.  Not fun at all.

Anyway, if you are concerned about it, I would try to go to a pediatric ENT Dr.  He ordered all the tests and performed the surgery.  Let me know if you have any other questions.  Good luck!

  • DS has had one for almost a year now; pedi said as long as it's not sensitive and mves, nothing to worry about.  She thinks it's from the ear infections he's had and is fine but measures it every time we go in.  It's worse when he's sick,,,  I think I'll ask about her opinion on the ENT.

DS had this a couple weeks ago while he had a mild cold. I took him to the ped and they confirmed it was from his cold. It was gone in a couple days.

I should have mentioned that my DD's was growing at a noticeable rate.  I kept an eye on it for a few weeks before I finally took her in.  I saw the bump first around Memorial Day, it kept getting bigger and she had the surgery around the 4th of July.  Maybe you could watch it for a few weeks and see if it gets bigger?  If it remains the same size, I would trust your pedi's advice.

You know, now that you mention your pedi said as long as it moves, I remember ours feeling it as well.  I can't remember what he labeled her bump, but he did press on it and try to move it.  I hope I did not worry you!  My DD's swollen lymphnode was pretty rare and it was growing pretty fast.  If it isn't growing, I would trust your pedi.

  • Still worried! It has only been about 36 hours on antibiotics, but it has not gone down in size yet....
