High Blood Pressure?

I went to the doctor today for my 39 week check-up and my BP was 144/70.  The nurse commented that it was really high, which it is comparitively speaking since I always have had low blood pressure.  When I saw the doctor she took my BP again and, of course since I was worrying, it was 143/90.  Then I layed down for them to take it again and it was 139/88.  I have to go back on Friday to see if it's still high and the doctor said if it was that I may have to be induced.
What I found odd was that the doctor didn't even ask what I had done differently to  increase the blood pressure...lack of drinking water, consumption of a lot of salt, etc.  I have no symptoms of preeclampsia so that's been ruled out.  It just so happens that I didn't have as much water yesterday as I normally do and I did eat a really salty meal last night (it was my birthday and I was craving brisket).  I'm pretty sure this is what caused the high BP and I wish the doctor would have taken those factors into consideration.
Anyone else have any experiences with high BP in the last couple weeks of pregnancy?

Re: High Blood Pressure?

  • yes, me. it wasn't from anything i did or didn't do, it was just my body reacting to the fact that it was stressed and about to give birth.

they induced me after my blood pressure readings would get slightly higher each day for a week.

  • Mine's been up for the last 3 weeks and I usually have very low blood pressure.  Last week she made me lay down on my left side for a while and they took it again and it was better, but still not great.  That's part of the reason we're going ahead with the c/section on Friday (my 39 week mark).  I think it's just the stress on your body of being pregnant.
  • High BP with or without protein in your urine is very serious for pregnant women.  It's something your Dr. should follow up on whether you think you have an explanation for it or not.  Relax.  If it's what you think it is then that will be evident at your next appt.  If it turns out to be hypertension, be thankful that they caught it.
  • Yes, I've been dealing with it and am on bedrest for it.  (There is a thread a little down the page that several of us commented on regarding bp and inductions).  As my doctor said, though, one reading doesn't make you hypertensive, so relax (easier said than done, I know), they want you to go back to see if it's a pattern.  If it is something environmental, it shouldn't show up next time.  Stress, however, will probably guarantee a higher reading...deep breaths :)

  • Thank you, everyone!
I'm my own worst enemy...I try not to worry because I know it'll make things worse but it's still difficult.  I"ll try to calm myself down before my next appointment on Friday though!

  • I started having blood pressure issues at 28 weeks. I have a bad case of "White Coat" so, once they said it was a little high, like 130/70, I freaked, and the next time I was so nervous it was 160/100! Of course got sent to triage, was monitored, and all tests came back fine. I was put on "work rest" for a week, and had to take them at home. I take them at home twice a day, and they are always around 115/70. But when I go to the office, they are high. They finally started taking it at the end of the appt., and they are lower. Anyway, I am being monitored, have to go in every week, ultra sound and NST this week. But overall, I'm fine. I feel fine. Cut out a lot of salt too, which I think helps.

    good luck!

  • I just went to the dr on Monday and it was a little high...I am anxious because I can't wait to hold my LO in my arms and this is my 1st pregnancy so I have no idea what to expect. She scheduled me for induction on Friday BUT it depends on how I do with my BP is for the next few days. They gave me a loaner BP monitor and a nurse will be calling me everyday to find out what the numbers are. I haven't had any problems with my BP at all and this was the first time so I really believe it's because I'm feeling anxious and just waiting.

  • I hope it goes down for you!!  How has it been looking?  I have a BP monitor from my father-in-law and it's gone down every time I've taken it...126/71 just now.  I found that cutting back the sodium, drinking more water and walking a mile every day has helped me.  Oh, and not stressing about it!  Hahahaha...that was the kicker for me.  I'm hoping it'll stay consistent so Friday they'll see the decrease and decide NOT to induce me.
