Nipple stimulation vs Nursing

A random thought popped into my head.  I am still nursing and may still be when LO#2 is born.  So, why would nipple stimulation bring on labor, but normal nursing won't?  Is it just because you leave the pump on for a long time?

Re: Nipple stimulation vs Nursing

  • Yeah, I think it's the amount of time.  When I used it in the hospital with #1 they had me on for 15 min. at a time or until contractions kicked in (then they took me off and I walked) for an hour or two (totally fuzzy on the details, but much longer than a nursing session).

  • Maybe it's the increase in stimulation.  If you are nursing throughout your pregnancy, your body is used to that level of stimulation, but if you add additional nipple stimulation, it could trigger something.  Totally speculating here.

I have also heard that the uterus becomes more sensitive to oxytocin at the end of pregnancy.

    That seems logical!
