Crocheters...please come in!

I need to know how to make dish towel toppers (like my Granny used to make).
They look like this:  image

Yes, they are fairly hideous, but my dad wants some because Granny's old ones that he uses are rather threadbare now.  I could easily crochet the topper part, but how do you start it on the towel?  Do you poke holes for the yarn & hook to go through?

I've tried looking around on Ravelry.com and I'm not really getting anywhere with it.

  • I've never made one, but I'd think you'd sew it together, no?

Maybe, I didn't even think of that.  I could also just get one from my dad this weekend and break it down or something.

  • I saw a tutorial the other day for a pillow case with a crocheted trim and it looks like they put holes in the cotton material similar to this: https://yougogirl.typepad.com/you_go_girl/2010/03/a-firm-foundation.html.  That's probably how I would do it for the towel too.

That's interesting...seems like it would work nicely.

  • When I do projects like that I use a crochet needle to sew around the top to give me something to hook on to...Or I'll use a small size hook like you use for crochet floss to start the project then do the rest with the proper size of needle.

  • I use a very small crochet hook to poke holes in the material and start a row, then I can change the size of the hook to make the stitches bigger. Good luck!
