Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Maybe I'm a little neurotic...vent

So...I have this friend who was never really sure if she wanted kids, well low and behold she's preggo with twins! Yesterday, she's emailing me pics of their clothing and she had everything laid out on the floor. Meanwhile, she has a dog and 6-7 cats. While I fully understand that you need to exposure your kids to germs and they can't live in bubbles I wouldn't put my brand new, freshly washed newborn clothing on the floor where my dog and cats walk around. I understand it's just the back of the clothes but it made me think that she's just not very aware of things. She didn't even have any pants packed for her hospital bed and she's bringing them home in the dead of winter in New England. I guess I'm just a little neurotic, maybe very neurotic, but I would think you'd be more careful in general with you newborn (potentially premature) twins. Especially since if one gets sick the other would most likely get sick. I tried to explain to her that once they are crawling they'll get exposed to plenty of germs.

Re: Maybe I'm a little neurotic...vent

  • Yeah, the clothes on the floor thing wouldn't be on my radar.  Not a big deal in my world.

As far as the pants go, I would put that down to a pregnant brain slip.  I doubt she would actually take them out in the winter without pants on.  I'm sure her DH would be bringing some to the hospital since they forgot to pack them.

  • Yes, you're being neurotic.  We have two cats and had absolutely no qualms about putting clothes on the floor.  We vacuum and keep the kitty litter box clean.

I'm also pretty sure the girls have eaten cat hair at some point in the last 11 months.

OK, well that's just silly then.

Were there sleepers?  The girls came home from the hospital in onesies but they were also had hats on and we put a bajillion blankets over them in the car.

  • We have two dogs and I didn't shelter my DS from them but I kept his room a pet free environment. Once he was crawling (6 months?) I let them all come and go as they pleased. I'm not saying not to expose your child to pets living in your home, the post was more about her state of mind in general. I guess no one is really prepared for something they've never experienced until it happens.

No, just long sleeve onesies with no hats or pants. She has been told that they need to be dressed in one more layer than she would dress herself so maybe it really was just pregnancy brain. Who knows! She just texted me and said she went out and bought some premie sizes (she only had newborn and 0-3 months) and pants, LOL.

  • Im with you on this one, i dont think you are being neurotic, it is gross and nasty to put baby's clothing in the floor with animals all over it, again i'm not an animal person, dont like them indoors and around kids at all, i guess i will be flamed for this, but in this board it seems to be ok to let the kids eat cat and dog hair but not ok to give them juice!! I think other people are neurotic!

I let DS lick juice off the dog.  So, where does that put me?

My dog licked the kid's pacifier the other day and I didn't get to him fast enough before Oli put it in his mouth. I hope he doesn't start licking his butt next.

This is obviously a joke, but from your picture I can see that your son is not a newborn/currently a premature infant. I let my 16 month old son do a lot of things that I would never let him do as a newborn. I also let him play, hug, and kiss the dogs but as I newborn I didn't let the dogs lick/kiss him.

  • Neurotic, yup.

I have a dog...we vacuum a lot, but I had no issues putting my newborn or his clothing on the floor.  I'm pretty sure the dog gave both boys "kisses" when they were itty bitty as well.

I think you're taking this too personally.  Let the MoM do what she needs to.  And take pants to the hospital if you're that concerned about it.

You are probably right. This friend is constantly calling, texting, & e-mailing me for advice, tips, questions about gear, etc. I guess I feel like she's taking time away from me and my family with out putting in any effort on her own (reading books, taking classes, doing her own research).

My mom has a dog, and the dog licked DS paci the other day and DS put in his mouth before i got to it, i didnt think he was doomed for that, but i would not let a dog do that to my newborn, as newborns dont have all their shots and their inmune system is not strong enough to fight off the bad stuff. So go ahead and keep on flaming i still dont like dog or cats or any animal in my house!!! And yes i give DS juice and everything he wants to eat...

Wow.  I did plenty of research but I also talked to my friends about what worked for them.   I am now officially give you the side-eye.

Yes, of course. I asked my friends for advice too but she called me (not kidding) 6-7 times yesterday and e-mailed me at least 4-5 times.

I did.  Do you need my info for CPS?

It wasn't a joke, my baby's been around the dog ever since he was born.

Mine too.  They were sharing toys very early.  My pedi actually said it was not an issue and cited several studies linking the presence of pets to lower allergies and asthma.

My DS has always been "around" the dogs. Unfortunately, he already has been diagnosed with asthma, sees the allergist regularly, and was hospitalized for a severe case of RSV. The intent of my post wasn't to say she should keep her babies away from her pets. I apologize if it was taken the wrong way as it wasn't my intent.

No worries.  We are mainly just being goofy now.  Or at least I am.  I won't speak on behalf of others.

Thanks. I just noticed your avatar. Do you have Boston Terriers? We have two.

I do.  She's will turn 9 years old tomorrow.  She acts like a young dog though.  DS wouldn't leave the house this morning until he said goodbye to her and gave her a hug.

We have a 7 year old (B&W) and a 2 year old (Brown & White). The younger one is DS' fav, he loves on her like crazy. When DS was a baby she would run over to his nursery door whenever he was crying, we call her the baby nurse.
