Disappointing doctors appointment

Everything is generally fine, so I shouldn't freak out, but it's not quite as smooth as it was for DD. The baby is fine; my bloodwork came back great for him/her, the heartbeat was strong, so that's great. Unfortunately, because I had a possible UTI during first tri, I am at a higher risk for GBS (group b strep), so will need to be given antibiotics during labor. I don't know why this is stressing me out so much. It doesn't help that I just read the babycenter article about it, and it sounds like if it gets passed to the baby, it's really bad. Did anyone else have this?

Oh, and apparently I'm borderline anemic, and the doctor seems to think the very fact that I'm pregnant means I will become fully anemic at some point.

I suppose it's karma that my first pregnancy had no issues, so I'm due to have something to stress about.

    Don't stress! Group B Strep is really common and so is anemia. I had both during my pregnancy and everything was fine. Unless you were planning on having a totally "natural" labor - as in no IVs or having a home birth, something like that - the Group B Strep thing is not a big deal. The only thing that was different was they told me to come to the hospital when my water broke so they could start the antibiotics. I was borderline anemic too and they just put me on iron pills I think when I was about 5-6 months along? I took it with my prenatals every day. I was more concerned during labor when they found meconium in my water and they said they may have to take DD to the NICU right after she's born to suction her, etc but she came out screaming so she was totally fine. Everything will be great! Enjoy your pregnancy as much as you can.

    I had GBS with my second pregnancy but not my first.  When I went into labor, I had an IV of antibiotics and had to wait 4 hours before pushing.  That was the only complication.  I could have pushed earlier but they would have had to give DS a shot of antibiotics after he was born since the IV antibiotics would not have been fully effective in my system.  Did you see the incidence rate in the article, it's really low.  1 in 3000 babies and that's for the whole population so it includes women who did not have adequate pre-natal care (a much higher percentage of women than you would want to believe), preterm births, etc.

    sorry! what a pita to have a UTI while pregnant. i hope everything works out for you. i also had a completely uncomplicated first pregnancy (but a hella complicated birth). so i was anticipating a complicated pregnancy wtih my second. honestly, i think i willed stuff to happen. i wish i could do it over again so that i could trust in my body and relax more and enjoy the time. instead, we had one potential disaster after another that never panned out to anything (not that i wish they had).  

    and, FYI, gbs can be adequately managed/treated for homebirth mams, too! a reputable homebirth midwife will be able to not only treat, but also help prevent gbs from growing in the first place.

    there are lots of homeopathic and natural treatments that are effective if you dont want to/cant go the iv antibiotic route.

    I had GBS...no biggie!!! its hard not to worry about eveyrthing...hang in there!!

    I had GBS, too. I had IV antibiotics hung while I was in labor and everything was fine!

    You and baby will be fine, too!

    I had a UTI and tested Beta strep positive. Many doctors will treat you with antibiotics if you have a UTI during your pregnancy, even if you don't test positive later. It really is no big deal. IV antibiotics significantly reduces the chance for cimplications. They will also closely monitor the baby right after baby after birth. The period of concern is really short 24 or 48 hours. Really, it's nothing to worry about!

    I was anemic and had to take iron supplements throughout my preg....

    I also had a UTI early in the second tri, no GBS... 

    everything was fine!

    I have both issues going on now: borderline anemic and the strep needing the antibiotics prior to labor and delivery. I guess I didn't know I was supposed to freak out about it. But maybe its all relative! I am just keeping my head above water moving to a new city! Big Smile
