Potty Training Bust

So, after the terrible day 1, on day 2 DD developed diarrhea in the afternoon so it was right back into pull ups.  Day 3 the diarrhea turned out to be a stomach flu which all of us came down with.  There was no attempt at potty training, instead we had please throw up in the potty training.  I am scoring that as a win, since we only had one of those as an accident.

Would you leap right back into potty training next weekend or would you give DD a break, take some more time off work and just start over.  I don't feel like we gained any ground so I am leaning towards the latter - the biggest change is that DD only wants to wear pull ups or panties now.  She won't wear diapers anymore.

Are you seeing signs that she's ready or did it seem like she wasn't getting it at all? If she is completely over the stomach flu next weekend and if you think she is ready, I would lean towards working on it some more. But if she's still sick and you think that she is not quite ready, maybe hold off. I know that for DD, it didn't seem like she was getting it on day 1 but then the next day she woke up and it seemed like she understood the concept (although she still had some more accidents). It takes time for them to figure out how to use those muscles and how to make the body to mind connection. But my philosophy is that if you saw any progress whatsoever, then try to keep the momentum going.

  • Ditto vtkendra if you think she is ready.  If it seemed like a total bust my own inclination is to wait.  We half-heartedly tried a bunch of times with Maggie and when it didn't work we took some time off.  When she was ready it worked and by day 2 we were accident free.  She has never had an accident in public and I think here were maybe 2 or 3 pee accidents since.  She also always held it during nap and bedtime and then was poop trained a week later.  I can only hope and pray PT'ing goes as well with Molly and it really made me glad we waited.
  • To be honest,  I feel like she is regressing and I don't know why.  Before she would ask to use the potty, and this weekend she was decidedly against it.  Maybe she just wasn't feeling well, I can personally attest that the virus was really unpleasant.  Your right though, I probably should just keep on it.  Perhaps panties as soon as we get home from school, pull ups during the day.

Are you doing anything to make it fun? Can you do stickers or treats or anything like that to try and "encourage" her? Maybe she was feeling like it was getting too stressful? I'm just brainstorming here. I know it's so difficult to figure out.

DD did not like sitting on the toilet at all. So, I would feed her animal crackers if she would sit and stay on the toilet. I would also put Dora on the TV which you can see from the toilet. Sometimes I gave her stickers too. Basically, I was bribing her every which way to get her to sit on the toilet. When she peed, we had a big celebration of high fives, etc.

  • I would let her direct things for a while. Diarrhea and puking would be kind of traumatic for DS as it is, let alone when starting to potty train. She might decide she is ready, or she will back off. I definitely wouldn't push anything though, particularly if she is showing signs of being frightened of the potty.

DS failed miserably at our first potty training attempt at 27 months. He was showing pretty much all of the potty training signs. He already knew when he needed to pee and would ask for a diaper if naked. We did 3 day potty training with rewards and he ended up frightened of the potty for a long time. A month after he turned three, he decided that he was ready and it took about a day. We are still working on #2, but he has weird mental issues with it, so we are just taking baby steps.(He still asks for a diaper) Overall, it is way less stress though.

Kind of on topic, but not really.

have you seen the freakeconomics thing on potty training?  it's about his daughter who is having trouble potty training.  he tells his wife that he's an economist & thus obviously well versed in incentive schemes, so he'd take over.  he decides to give his daughter 3 M&Ms each time she goes on the potty.

within 3 days she went from zero bladder control to ultimate bladder control-- expelling tiny bits of pee multiple times--- to maximize M&Ms.

LOL! I can totally see a kid doing this (& the dad being SO SURE he had all the answers).
